W10 Laptop & Hard Drive Testing

Hi everyone,

I've got a brand new - couple of weeks old - Windows 10 laptop that's suddenly ground to a halt (it's taking minutes to respond to a mouse click). I suspect a HDD issue but want to test the drive to be sure before I go through the hassle of RMA'ing the laptop etc. etc.

Normally I'd just load Seatools for DOS from a USB drive and use that to test the HDD but having tried that, Seatools can't see the HDD because it's not compatible with the Motherboard's storage controller in AHCI mode. - I've used Seatools hundreds of times before and already knew that it needs the controller to be set to IDE / Compatibility mode. Unfortunately, there is no option to change the mode in this BIOS - the only option is AHCI.

I also can't remove the HDD from the laptop to test it in another system without invalidating the warranty. - It's buried in the middle of the laptop, with no access door / panel, meaning a complete strip down to get to it. - Not an option.

I've eventually managed to install Seatools for Windows onto the system (took an hour and a half) and am currently running a long generic test but the system goes unresponsive for about half an hour at a time and the test is currently only at 2%...!

Any ideas on other methods I can use to properly test this drive in case it can't complete this test?

Sorry for the late reply but Seatools for Windows eventually (after several hours) pronounced the HDD faulty after only completing a few percent of the long generic test. The laptop was returned to the supplier because they wouldn't let anyone replace the HDD without invalidating the warranty on the whole machine...which is understandable because the average user would butcher the laptop. - How are they to know that we would do it properly?
