Considering the performance of even the overclocked 1080 it not worth the upgrade for me. The 1080Ti will be a different story with a much larger jump in performance.
Keep dreaming about $400 for 980Ti when new 1070s will sell for $380 after the stock replenishes and all Q3-Q4 games will be optimized for Pascal in DX12 mode

I really don't see your depreciation point when 1080 FE will depreciate much more severely when the 1080 ti drops. He's happy with his cost of ownership, you made a similar decision with your early adopter tax.

980 ti probably won't be "gimped" the same way the 680/780 did considering these Pascal cards were mostly die shrinks of Maxwell.

At least, this is what I figure. There's no harm in waiting if you enjoy what you use.

Lightnings seem to hold better value. Superior in every way to the reference design like your 1080. Like I said I'll be happy to get anywhere between 350-400 each. Shouldn't be a problem. I'm not hurting for money so could care less either way. Lol at Q3-Q4 games not being well optimized on full-Maxwell DX12 that is the 980Ti and Titan X. The funny part will be when the 1080Ti drops and you realize you way overpaid for a cut-down half chip that is the 1080.

We'll see. People seem to think Nvidia will do the exact same timetable with gpu releases as they did last year. The 780Ti came out only 5 month's after the 780. If Nvidia has proven anything over the years its that they are very unpredictable. Last year was odd with the release of the more powerful fully unlocked Titan X first and then the 980Ti after. I expect to see a 1080Ti before the end of the year and a new more powerful Titan shortly after. I'm good either way my Lightnings at 1530mhz are tearing it up right now.

The 1080 FE depreciation is assuming that Vega will be competitive and Nvidia won't have free reign on pricing. Given what they've done to 1080 pricing, I wouldn't be surprised if the 1080Ti goes for $799 AIB/$899 FE... (Considering that they can't keep the 1080 stocked at $699 it wouldn't be unreasonable) At those prices, the 1080 will hardly depreciate. The only thing that can stop that profit train would be IF Vega that blows away the 1080.

Doesn't make much sense from Nvidia's perspective. Nvidia will first release GP102 as a Titan, and if there's no competition for it from AMD's side, they're not going to be in a hurry to release a 1080 Ti for less. I wouldn't be surprised if Nvidia even jacked up the Titan prices to 1499$.

The only hope for high end to drop prices is Vega being competitive. P10 didn't exactly raise my hopes, but perhaps a TSMC chip with HBM2 will be a different story. At least they'll have to compete with price.

Man just let the guy enjoy his Lightnings lol. I get that some people care about resale value but if he cared he would've done something.

And since I watercool, I treat every GPU purchase as a sunk cost. Plus past a certain point you're better off keeping the old GPU as a backup card than trying to get another $100 out of it. But that's just me.

OG Titan released 11 months after 680 on an immature 28nm process. I say there's 0 chance we'll see a 1080 Ti or Titan before Q1 2017, and even then that's being a bit overly optimistic.

Still, hope they compare the big die once it drops later on. Anyone folded on these cards yet?

Well yo won the silicon lottery. Consider yourself lucky. My 980ti Classified cant do more than 1400mhz under a custom loop in gaming. Benchmarks 1480Mhz is max. So the graphs are pretty much spot on.
