You just lost the lottery lol.
My reference 980ti on stock cooler did 1450mhz before being temp limited.
On custom loop I run 1480mhz on stock voltage with bios flashed to boost that.
When I was looking for my OC limit it was 1490mhz on 1.22v, 1500mhz on 1.25v 1510mhz on 1.28v for 100% stable. Could bench mark at 1550mhz

My MSI 980Ti Gaming does 1500 core on stock volts and stock bios (1.192V in load), and 1560 core with custom bios and 1.25V. Memory also does +500mhz, personally im waiting 1080Ti or so before i start upgrading, runs everything i throw at it with 3440x1440 nicely.

So I guess the thing to take away from all this is "GDDR5 is more or less obsolete".

Well it is not like there were plans to use GDDR5 for the next 100 years.
HBM and GDDR5X are the future. At some point in time they will tickle down to the low range cards as well. Just like GDDR5 did to GDDR3.

Keep in mind that the 1070 is still on its first driver. In time, as new optimizations are made for Pascal, I expect to see the 1070 pull further away from the 980ti and Titan X; both of which have had over a year of driver optimizations.

You can say this to Rx 480 too/ after 2 month will be equal to GTX 980 Ti.

FTFY

But honestly, that's a pretty ambitious statement.

Yeah, I don't see how a card that can barely keep up with a 980 could beat a 980ti, no matter how hard AMD's driver team try.

Drivers means nothing. It only affect performance in some games by small margin, while breaking perfomrance on some other game.

No driver will make your core and memory OC more. Drivers will help if your card has some SF problems or some games have problems.

I picked up my 980Ti almost when non-referents came out. Now after year and many many drivers after- I see no difference in FPS in games that I played on day-one drivers with all newest drivers for 900 series in past year. Nothing will make your card faster/stronger apart from silicon lottery. In some games drivers fixed stutter or GPU usage- but won't affect your card directly.

So all those saying "ow....driver will soon make 1070 and 1080 soo much better!" is pure BS. BS. BS. My friend had 780Ti (upgraded to 1080), he never had problems with all new drivers for 900 series in games. His card was getting him as much fps as 780Ti could- drivers didn't make suddenly my 980Ti to give more fps than when I bought it.

Right now 1555 980Ti vs my friend (mentioned earlier) OCed 1080 is purely 17-18% performance difference. For him- 780Ti to 1080 is huge jump. For me- 18% is nothing.

And drivers won't change fact that 1080 and 1070 has super poor Overclocing potential.

And all those "Nividia won't support 900 series with drivers" is pure BS. I have friends sitting on 780Ti, some still on SLI 780 and they didn't have any problems with drivers in past two years. Bah in my younger times I wasn't even upgarding drivers, never had problems with GPU cards.

Drivers my ass.....silicon lottery is your only God to pray to smile.gif

Maybe I did win the silicon lottery, as my 1070 Gaming X is 2560x1440 stable in every game I have tried (2 hours at max setings minimum) at just over 2.1Ghz, which is faster than a 980ti at 1600+. And yes, drivers do improve a GPU's performance over time; varies between games but it is there. Fast forward a year from now and I can see 1070 and 1080 being further away from 980ti and TX. We will see.
