Help! When I tap on my headset cup, the sound comes out of my speakers!

Just as the title says, I have a pair of headphonest from Sennheiser, the HD598SE along with some random Phillips 2.0 desk monitors. They are hooked to an Asus DX 7.1 sound card using a 3.5mm splitter so that I may have audio coming through both without changing connections.

The Issue that I am having, (not so much an issue that I'm NEEDING to fix or anything, it's just confusing me how this even works) is that when I turn my speakers on and the volume to a normal level, and I tap on the side of my headphones, left cup or right cup, the tapping sound can be heard coming through my desk speakers... I use a Modmic 4.0 with these headphones for gaming and have tried it with and without it plugged in. Same results. So I know that it is not the Modmic transferring the sound. How does this happen?

Thanks to everyone who reads or has an answer! Like I said, I don't really need to fix it because I'm usually only going to use either my headset or speakers, not both so I'll never really hear it. More or less just want to know how something like this could be caused.

Anyway have a great day everyone!

Cheers,

Headphones can also act as a basic microphone. Most likely the shock of you tapping your headphones is generating a short signal, and since your headphones and speakers are sharing a connection through a splitter that signal can travel into, be amplified by, and projected by your speakers.

This is why audio inputs and outputs are usually isolated from each other through some kind of mixer or channel mechanism.

Makes sense to me, I do recall watching a youtube video where it showed someone making a microphone out of an old speaker so I see where you're coming from. I never heard this when I used my closed back Logitech G230, but maybe that was because it was closed back and the tap never resonated enough force to make a sound out of my speakers.

Thanks for the reply!
