Leaving the IHS on just add's another layer of TIM, the IHS has the same contact to the die as the cold block would, so there is no greater contact with or without the IHS, there is no thermal benefit to it other than being easier to get perfect contact with the block. ie if the IHS is off, the cold block is effectively the IHS, but unless it is perfectly mounted with spacers of the correct thickness to hold the CPU in place in the socket and ensure the block is mounted with perfectly flat contact with the die then running with IHS on is probably the best option. Only caveat to this would be if the cold block is excessively thin I guess, in which case the IHS would help spread the heat to the outer edges of the cold block, but that might be negated by the extra layer of TIM.

If you get everything right with IHS off it's worth about 5 degrees from my testing, but to remove the chance of a bad mount or bad contact or a cracked die or bent pins I think I'll stick with the IHS on next time around. I ran out of CLU so I'll try the CLP that I have. CLU is a right pain to clean off the block once it has gone subzero, I actually need to lap it off my block every time I remount. I guess CLP will be the same or worse.

I've cracked a die before running chips naked and am in no rush to do it to my cherry 4790k lol. Hairline crack diagonally across the corner frown.gif.

CLP works amazing sub zero but it is also total PITA to clean up as well. I doubt it will be any better then the CLU. I have some CLU on the way but have not ran it yet. The metal TIMs are definitely worth it though since nothing else comes close on a sub ambient setup. At 8c it becomes a solid so its basically like soldering on the IHS or cold plate smile.gif.

Temp probes came in today and I STILL don't have my CLP that I ordered a week ago...I'm so spoiled by Prime is sickening frown.gif. Tracking shows that I will get it tomorrow.

These temp probes are nuts - crazy tiny with super fast response time, leads are teflon lined, and a dab of epoxy where the leads meet the probe. Didn't have a syringe so I just used a spreader to cram as much AS Epoxy as I can into the tiny hole, spread it all around the thermistor, then pushed it in until it bottomed out. Hopefully there is no air bubble in it - plenty of epoxy squished out so there shouldn't be.

fox certainly likes to use good kit! I'd say its worth the premium over the ebay specials I used in my old setup, hopefully you can offload some to recover costs a bit.

Are your arktiq chiller blocks insulated by the way? Or are they too close to ambient/dew temp to bother? I've got my archimedes block wrapped in neoprene which limits the ice/condensation buildup. I'd send you my second PWM TEC controller but I had that one configured for 0-30*c temp range so it's no better than the arktiq controller. The one I use with my 669w is configured for -20 to 10*c I think.

Yeah i can testify to the fact that low temps basically solder the water block to the IHS. It's actually the worst to remove from the die, I can never get it perfectly clean again after using CLU sub zero.

hay puck, what kind of TIM do you use on the TEC itself, or do you use two different kinds of TIM, one type for the hot side of the TEC and another kind for the cold side of the TEC?

Yea, the chillers are all self contained so only the tubing, barbs, and xfire links needed to be insulated. I kept them set to 15c with my block at 10c for normal usage but the two of them were able to keep the coolant at 0c if i wanted. At that point i was controller limited, since i could only go as low as 0c with the controller so the block never used more then like 40% duty cycle.

Before i used AS Ceramique 2 since it is one of the few TIMs that can handle the crazy heat cycling of a TEC ofer time. This time I have CLP on both sides of the TEC and will be using CLU between the IHS and cold plate. Just that should be worth a few C at the same cold plate temp as before, since my last block was copper hot plate with AL cold plate so i couldnt use CLP/CLU on it.

ok, so what is CLP?
I look up CLP on the search, i don't get what your using.

CLP is Coollaboratory Liquid Pro, CLU is Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra.

CLP is a bit thinner and runnier, most use it under the IHS. CLU is a bit easier to spread and supposedly easier to remove, and is better if your surfaces are not lapped since it fills gaps better. CLU is also slightly better performance in most applications with a bit higher w/mk (~38 vs ~32), but we're only talking 1-2c. Both are many, many times better then traditional TIMs.

I have seen comparisons where CLP actually performs slightly better then CLU under the IHS, while CLU performs better on top of it...but again, the 1-2c we're talking about is withing margin of error/mount variance.

Oh, the CLU came in today but when getting everything together I realized I don't have the longer bolts and springs I need for a through-board mount and it was too late to pick them up. I have a week off coming up on Wednesday with my first two days unplanned so it will have to be finished then smile.gif.

Soon!
