Thread Starter
I want to upgrade my gpu and now turn to ocn for suggestions, So here we go.

1. Sell my GTX 780 and get a 1070

2. Sell 780 and go cfx rx480 (pending decent benchmarks)

3. Pick up a used 780 and go sli with thoughts of watercooling down the line but may need to upgrade psu for this.

So what would ocn do?

It depends on whether you can wait or not. A small Vega 11 might be good for you (depending on benchmarks).

None of the other options are good:
  • The problem with the GTX 1070 is that, although perhaps 30-40% faster than your GTX 780, it is not going to be very future proof without Async.
  • I'm reluctant to recommend multi-GPU setups (SLI 780) and CFX 480 because the futures of SLI and Crossfire are open to debate with DX12. Whether developers will continue the status quo, go for Explicit Multi-Adapter, or even dump multi-GPU setups is not clear to me.
  • The SLI 780 is doubly inferior in that it has the problem of not being Async for DX12. Kepler has been losing ground versus Hawaii and will continue to do so, especially with Polaris now out.

I guess if you are planning on keeping the cards for only 2 years, Async may not prove to be a big drawback, but it also depends on what games you play. It is looking like if you play lots of strategy games or console ports, AMD may be the better choice.

I think that waiting might be the best choice. Of course waiting has its uncertainties too. It will come down to whether AMD has delivered this time or not.

If it means anything to you, I personally plan to wait for Vega to see what AMD has to offer.

You could wait for RX 490 (if AMD has plans on it),or wait for Vega/GP100
