Fx 6350 Ihs scratched

Thread Starter
Hello, sorry for this new thread.
I've got a fx 6350 for building another pc (cousin smile.gif ).
Doing some tests with my heatspreader, i noticed that the cpu got scratched from it when trying to set it on the cpu.
Error was from me, not enough thermal paste and in attachment you can see the rsult doh.gif .

Would this affect some performance, or thermal performance?

Shouldn't be much of an issue, as long as there's no significant amount of air between the CPU cooler body and IHS.

The IHS is just a basic piece of metal

Well, if its scratched, on a very small scale there will be valley and hill at the scratch area. Try scratching some plastics and you can see the effect. The hills, you need to get rid of them, they will increase the gap for everything. Of course this is small case, but better check it, see if you can run a straight ruler/object across the IHS and not interrupted.

Get some sandpaper. Wet and dry. 400, 600, 800 grit. Take your time and gently sandpaper the scratches out of it. Place the sandpaper on a flat surface like a plate of glass to ensure a flat surface on the IHS. When it is flat and all of the scratches are gone be happy. Or you can continue on until it has a mirror finish.

This is called lapping the cpu.

well, is not a bad idea lapping the cpu. But it can void the warranty from the retailer i think.
Maybe i can try with another thermal compund. At the moment i'm using artic silver 5. Thinking on switching with another one. Any suggestion ? redface.gif:o

I´m afraid that the warranty already have been voided, since you done some damage to de CPU.

Another option is just put some good thermal greese in it, and life move on...

Good Luck !

6350's look beautiful when lapped, I lapped mine and it did help using the stock (not wraith cooler) heatsink @ 4ghz for my families PC, temps never go above 65*C on stresses.

Of course it voids the warranty. I used to lap cpu's but stopped because in my opinion it is a waste of time. If you lap a heatspreader you have to lap the base of your heatsink also. I worked all the way up to 2500 grit sandpaper. Heatspreaders are concave for a reason. The base of a heatsink is concave for a reason. If you read Noctua, Thermalright literature they state the reasoning behind it. Plus no one wants to buy a lapped cpu if you decide to sell it.

If you didn't also lap the base of your heatsink you didn't accomplish anything. The base of every heatsink out there is as concave as any heatspreader on a cpu. You want both surfaces to be flat.

Well I did since it did improve temps. I think since I lapped the CPU down to copper, having direct contact with the heatsink that also has copper as the base made a slight difference.
