[ET] Steam Machine Sales Are Abysmal.

Said analysis comes courtesy of Ars Technica, who contacted Valve to confirm that the 500K figure includes Steam Machines, all of which ship with a Steam Controller. Toss in SteamOS users who may have purchased a controller separately and people who bought more than one, and the actual number of Steam Machines sold since the platform formally launched last November could be significantly lower than 500K.

On the plus side, since Steam Machines are doing so bad, Linux games are now cheaper than ever.

So ya know.

That's something. yessir.gif

Glad, all steam machines would do is piss people off. Worse than buying a console, low spec graphics for the console price with mostly no upgrade path?

Still more sales than the Ouya, I guess that's something at least. biggrin.gif

I kind of expected this to be the case. You're already restricted, if anything though, it may have sparked a few thousand more people to build custom PC's to prove they can do better?

Called it DOA before they even came out. Past posts show that. That idiot thought they could actually compete and beat the consoles! laughingsmiley.gifrolleyes.gif

They needed more control over the specs, maybe done what google does with Nexus by having 1 manufacturer per generation. It should be possible to build a pretty nice steam box with 200$ 480X but it won't do if the brand is tarnished.

- Just brainstorming a bit, what I would do is ask for only manufacturers willing to sell Steam Boxs at cost (0 profit) with the promise of a 50% cut of Valve's margin on all steam sales made using the steam boxes. This way the companies that build underwhelming machines will refuse, leaving only manufacturers that know they can build machines that a buyer will happily use for 2-3 years giving them a larger profit margin than normal. If valve really wants to get it off the ground, they can even subsidize the machine a little, so that a gamer can buy a steam box for 500$ what it would cost them 650$ for an equivalent PC (-windows cost - manufacturer margin - valve subsidy)

The only way to sell them is to announce HL3 as a steambox exclusive. 2cents.gif

As bad as console ports are to Windows PC, they seem to get even worse going to Linux.  Driver support is delayed.  The content just isn't there to support it.  Seems like every review shows significantly reduced FPS compared to Windows.  As said above anyone that would be interested in this already has a PC or 2 or 3.  I use Linux a lot, and prefer it to Windows for most things, but not much for gaming.

The ball needs to get rolling. Valve has just started pushing.
Most of all, more A-list games need to be made for Linux, not just for Windows/X-Box and this requires that Vulkan drivers, engines and toolchains need to mature.
