It's the steam machines price and inability to provide VR at it's price point.

I mean most people who invest in VR would love a Steam Machine that can do VR.

Perhaps Steam needs to get on the AMD bandwagon and shipping out some $350 system with polaris and a four core zen.

Well I remember Steam partnering up with nvidia and 99% of these systems were Intel & Nvidia, and cost a damn fortune compared to systems that you could build yourself.

This is why I went with Steam Link, and even that is not without issues frown.gif.

I'm not mad because it was $50, and there's still hope with driver updates and the like, but overall, I feel 'meh' about it.

4 core zen APU with a polaris 10 GPU and 8 GB. of HBM2 and a 128 gb SSD for around 400-450.

That would actually sell and would destroy current consoles in terms of raw power. Steam machines came out too early and didnt use the proper hardware.

There is only one possible way to make a console cheap and powerful at same time. You must use a AMD APU.

Intel CPU plus nvidia GPU is too expensive and valve should of known better. What a waste of money and manpower this whole idea has been. They should of spent that money on developing a Directx emulator for linux which is the only way linux is truly going to take off for gaming. It needs to be compatible with 99 percent of current games and for that to happen you need to emulate directx.

Wine is good, but imagine how much better it would be if Valve spent millions of dollars on it and put some of the smartest programmers in the industry working on it for a few years.

Instead they blew their CS:GO and DOTA 2 hat money on retarded gimmicks like steambox and steamcontroller, and the soon to be released Vive.

VR is still 5 years off from becoming mainstream. It wont succeed until the screens are higher res and midrange GPU's become at least 3-4 times more powerful than today.

I like how everybody wags a finger at Valve, saying it's their fault steamOS isn't selling like hotcakes. Valve doesn't make any steam machines, and they were very explicit that they never would. Steam machines are made by third parties who just offer their existing Windows boxes with steamOS and pocket the difference in the OS license fee.
This arrangement was destined to failure from the start, because Valve angled steamOS as an xbox competitor, when the majority of the steam machines are the traditional overpriced Alienware/ibuypower variety.

I agree, steamOS is a huge waste of money. However, Valve should have been reinvesting that money in game development, the thing they haven't done in nearly a decade. You know, the thing that made them huge, rich, and famous.

Everyone knew this was going to flop when it was announced, but I think Valve is playing the long tail on this one.

Consoles are becoming more like PC's, and Valve is getting a lot of consumer data on how to make a PC similar enough to a console to appeal to console consumers. The next generation of consoles will be even closer to a PC, and by then Valve will probably have things figured out to the point where they can work with the third party manufacturers to make a competitive product. Meaning a product that is largely indistinguishable from a console but has more of the positive PC features to give them an edge.

And no, by next generation I'm not referring to this PS4.5/XB1.5 garbage that's on the way. When I say long tail I mean long. I mean, Valve even suckered 3rd party manufacturers into soaking up the majority of development and manufacturing costs, they've got no reason to rush trying to make a profit off of this venture.
