[ET] Steam Machine Sales Are Abysmal. - Page 6

As bad as console ports are to Windows PC, they seem to get even worse going to Linux. Driver support is delayed. The content just isn't there to support it. Seems like every review shows significantly reduced FPS compared to Windows.

Because almost all of the focus of the guys writing drivers for these GPU's is on Windows. The performance on linux is just abyssmal for GPU drivers which will affect everything..

On that subject, AMD doesn't even have particularly competitive dx11 CPU efficiency on windows 7-10

its only recently did they take driver development seriously.
and even worse off, AMD hadn't developed linux drivers at all until 2004.

Enthusiasts would rather build their own rig (with Windows), or stream from their desktop (to a Steam Link or low-end HTPC).

Yeah?

They're just regular pre-builts but have Linux (SteamOS) installed instead of Windows. Not many people actually thought they would do well. Especially when one company is charging $1,000 for their Steam Machine which has an i3 6100, 8GB DDR4 and GTX 950. It was just as bad at launch as well. You know your pre-built is overpriced if Alienware offers something very similar for less than half the price.

They could learn from microsoft, release hl3 and hardcode it to run only on steam machines.

but I could probably just run steamos in vmplay better than their offered hw

1. Work on Steam machines
2. Bring prebuilt PCs to market
3. Customers confused. why should they buy them? confused.gif
4. Loss
5. Release more cosmetic items for DotA, CS GO and TF2.
6. Profit.

Didn't third party vendors make the machines?

They are probably the ones taking the loss. I think the idea of a Steam machine must have originated from Valve.

Correct. Valve don't make Steam Machines. They only made the OS and they distribute them with their hardware store on Steam.

Steam machines are just a tool to help steamOS grow bigger , decouple PC gaming from Windows and reduce the threat MS and windows store pose to Valve. I seriously doubt valve ever wanted to make money out of the machines themselves.
