Overwatch hit just over a week ago, and everyone kind of knew that the game would be a huge hit. Massive fan excitement, a fabled developer, and a gameplay formula that was just starting to really become a phenomenon combined to form the perfect wave of anticipation. Now we know just how big that anticipation was with Blizzard announcing that Overwatch sales have already topped seven million, making it “one of the most successful global game launches of all time”.

It's pretty nuts.

The little game that nobody thought stood a chance against Battleborn won in the end.

That company already killed Duke Nukem. Here's hoping they suffer a slow death! yessir.gif

The funny thing I noticed about Overwatch is that the people I know who are playing it right now are people I'd never expect to play a game like that.

To me, it almost looks like an "updated TF2" to some extent.

Its a lot like TF2 honestly, but there are 21 characters with their own style of play and difficulty so theres very little "I have nothing to play" going on.

It's not nearly as good as tf2 was during it's hayday, but it's fun and entertaining. Even more-so when you play with a full group of friends.

What do you mean "As good as TF2 in its hayday"?

I think that's what drew a lot of people to it. That, and it seems the characters have more personality. Not just in design, but in character as well.

Probably means that when tf2 came out and the following years, it was fresh and exciting. Fast paced and pretty unique in it's gameplay elements.

That and the fact that hats weren't the main reason to play the game.

My favorite aspects of Overwatch:

1. There's a pay gate: you have to buy this game before you can play it, and in my experience people who pay money for something generally act as though they have a vested interest in it. Also, it's now less likely that people's younger children will be playing, something that I didn't like about TF2; it's hard to be competitive when half of the teams are just doing what they want.

2. There are decent hardware requirements: you need somewhat relevant gaming hardware in order to play. Arguments can be made, but this to me again helps with the differences between those that pay and the F2P crowd. Both have their merits, but in competitive games I find that the pay model attracts more mature competitors.

3. Character diversity: attacks, special abilities, and (my personal favorite) movement are all different between characters. This, to me, helps to slow the fatigue that accumulates from playing the same game types repeatedly.

What I like most about Overwatch is its laser focus. I'm a competitive person, I enjoy winning more than most people enjoy eating fresh cookie dough out of the bowl. Overwatch allows me to do what all great games and sports do: deliver strict rulesets and conditions and allow me as competitor to put my own skill and flavour that allows me get the edge and play for victory.

Here are 21 playable characters within four distinct class types. They all look unique and all have their own weapons and abilities that are non-negotiable.

Here is a map. It can only support one gametype and its boundries are clearly defined.

Good luck.

I fell that this is the foundation of what makes Overwatch so good. Like any good sport or game, the rules do not change. This allows competitors and spectators alike to understand the game quickly and helps to separate the good players from the truly amazing. When I see a Pharah running around I know exactly what I get. I get a mildly quick airborne capable character that can shoot rockets that do X damage within X radius and she has a secondary pushback skill that can be dangerous against open areas with pits. She has an Ultimate attack that let's her unleash a barrage of missles. There is no second guessing. I see her and I know exactly what I'm up against. I do not need to guess or take unnecessary risks to understand her attributes on the field. In the same way with hockey for example, I know what a goalie is. I know his equipment and his range of movement and his boundaries within the arena. These are known quantities but what I don't know is the individual behind the mask. What unique style of play does he represent that separates him from someone like a Martin Brodeur.

Simple and consistent rules applied to all competitors are what make sports and games accessible and successful. The reason why chess remains the most popular board game in existence is because the rules have been defined and are not to be diverted from. Sure the pieces may look different but the player and his skillset are what differentiate him from other players.

Also are the fact that the game just feels good to play. The movement of all characters is on point, the weapons are fun to use and allow a player to be as creative as they like within the rules of the game. It also looks incredible and has such charm. It's such a polished game and I look forward to how it grows over time.

this is exactly what i have noticed so far with overwatch.
this seems to be hitting most of the people i know that game, even the extremely casual "once a month" type people.
