Old computers laying around... what to do with them?

Thread Starter
So I have 2 computer and some hardware laying around not doing anything, and thinking of making servers or something.

First one is:
Intel i7 2600k
Gigabyte GA-P76A-UD4-B3
MSI twin frzr GTX 560ti
gskill sniper 16GB 1866 DDR3
WD 750GB Black
Plextor 120GB SSD
Fractal Design ARC Midi R2

Second system:
AMD Phenom II X3 720 BE
ASUS M3A78-T
AMD Radeon HD5850 Sapphire
Kingston 8GB DDR2
WD 250GB Blue
OCZ Agility 60GB SSD
Antec 300 case

and a Power color HD4850 is laying around here somewhere,
and a case, cooler master HAF 932.

Any ideas of what I could do with the system and parts?
NAS, Plex server, something else server?
Thats just off the top of my head.
The AMD system is a bit old.
Kinda sad seeing them gather dust, other than the days I actually use them as a backup computer to my current one.
The AMD one actually has linux mint on just to mess around with right now.
But the 2600k, I feel like I could do something more worthwhile with that system.

I looked at what they are worth if I sold the parts, which isn't really that much.

Any other ideas?

I would definitely put it to use, if you dont need another pc, why not make it a media machine for a tv? thats what I usually do.

Storage if you want to spend the money. Otherwise take out the video card of the i7 and learn Linux CLI and mess around with VMs and you'll find something. There should be a recent thread to give you some ideas of what others do.

I used old parts to create a file/backup server that also runs a couple minecraft servers for the kids. Just recently I built a PFSense router box using an old AMD Athlon X2 and a few Gigs of RAM. I turned my old college laptop into a plex server to stream movies out to the different places in the house. Its so much nicer not having stacks and stacks of DVD boxes to contend with.

use both of them to host neither a server for a game or use it to send spam to all the people that you hate.

I feel that an i7 2600k for just watching TV would still be kind of wasteful. Besides already have an HTPC with a pentium for the TV.

Already doing that with AMD 720 machine.

I built a pfsense box with an embedded system.

That made me giggle a little.

So i'm thinking a VM server one VM being plex media server, and some other ones, NAS, etc. My concern is that being a K version CPU and not having VT-d. Would that be a problem if I use Windows Server 2012 R2 and allocate a HDD to said VM? Also would if be beneficial to take out the GTX560ti and put in something more power efficient, considering that the motherboard does not support the iGPU of the CPU?
Also I were to make a VM with plex server, how many cpu's should I allocate to it, if had 2-3 streams at 1080?

I was trying to find the answer for you for virtualization on the on that 2700k. I found this chart:
http://ark.intel.com/compare/43556,46497,52214,52213

That says yes vt-x but no for vt-d. Then I was trying to figure out the difference and if Hyper-V could with with vt-x or not. But I haven't found a direct answer.

I did find this on the TechNet site:
Quote:
Hardware-assisted virtualization. This is available in processors that include a virtualization option—specifically, Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) or AMD Virtualization (AMD-V).

Although now that i look closer that's for 2008. The 2012 page isn't so specific on the processor requirements so I'm guessing it's the same. Since all it says is "Intel VT" maybe vt-x will work...
Nothing wrong with going back to 2008 r2 by the way smile.gif

Vt is for Intel virtualization. Essentially vt-x means there is software virtualization and vt-d means the VM has direct access.

I figured I'll turn the 2600k system into a plex server. Virtualization does work with it too. So if I need something in its own environment I can just set up a VM.
I'm planning on putting it into a rack, so does anyone know of the smallest size rack case I can put a ATX MB and normal PSU into?

Well ya, I wasn't sure if Hyper-V required one or the other or either of them. Since his 2600k only has the one and all the hyper-v page says is "intel vt".
