My 1080s are overclocked to 2.1 GHz and they actually run quite cool compared to an OCed Titan X. Under a long gaming load they do not go above 75 C. The reference coolers are not as bad as people are slandering.

I believe it, the problem is likely hot spots. There is a price to be paid for packing more transistors into less area.

here you go guys! 2 x faster

this time round has shown Nvidia being very sleazy and deceiving

now people are getting hyped for 2.2k?

- NVIDIA overclocks the card for you to near max

- call reference card founders charge $100 extra

- aftermarket cards start at $599 but Nvidia has already the price @ 699

- bios hardware locked

- most cards not getting waterblocks, more restrictions

- new sli bridge not compatible with EK blocks

- use only a 8 pin on FE forces ppl to buy aftermarket close to the FE price but no waterblock support

- weaker cores, not much increase when overclocking

am I the only one seeing this

nope you are not alone. I am waiting until Vega and 1080 ti battle before I decide which card to go, and it won't just be performance numbers either I am looking at. as I plan to buy a gsync or freesync monitor at same time I do my ultimate build... so yeah lot of variables. and with the advent of gsync and freesync, having the most powerful overclocking card is kind of null now anyway, as long as its quite powerful. so if AMD pricepoint is right, and comes a close second, same with Zen... I may very well be doing an all AMD build next time around, but still waiting for benches just to be safe biggrin.gif

So in regards to overclocking potential, I will say that its a little disappointing to see that we aren't (yet) able to get the extra power that we (the niche enthusiasts) want. Honestly it'd be a little silly of them to release their "big bad new awesome architecture" that's been hyped up for a long time without ramping it up to out-of-the-box impressive numbers.

BUT Im not mad at all. If NVidia didn't have the cards clocked closer to their max from the factory then the majority of purchasers who have no desire to overclock would be left with a card that doesn't or just barely beats out their previous gen GPU. Also, if this run clocked to every users satisfaction then why would the current 1080 owners have any desire to purchase the Ti when its released?

It is a bit of an upset for users like us but I really cant blame NVidia for the complaints we have so far. Even if half this site refused to purchase their cards they would still be doing well and raking it in.

I'd like to be wrong because someone just bought my 980 Ti on Ebay.
There will not be thermal throttling, the HOF card uses a completely different heatsink. unless someone at galax fell asleep at the wheel, that heatsink will perform much better then the stock heatsink.

You typically dont have to crank the fans on AIB heatsinks. See the PNY XLR8 triple fan cooler, the vga acx cooler, gigabyte windforce cooler, ece.
