I really hope we get high end ITX boards for AM4. What are the chances?

I would really like to get a board like the ones in the link below when ZEN becomes available. Will there be any technical hurdles with ZEN and smaller form factor boards that plague FX cpu's and smaller motherboards?

I think the problem is how much power hungry Zen will be. Because if you need 6+2 phase to run it properly, you have space issues to fit the phases in ITX, i think.

I could always "undervolt".

biggrin.gif Undervolting helps, but if Zen is 125W and draws power like the FX or the Thuban, you need 4+1 good phases at least, even undervolted. I have ran 1090T on AM2+ 4+1, as well as FX8320@4Ghz on the 4+1 Asrock 970 extreme3, undervolted in all cases.

It's doable, but they will still run hot, so if you put them in a small ITX case, things will get worse. I mean, i wouldn't count too much on the motherboard's longevity in the long run. If 4+1 are feasible to be put on ITX, then i suppose it's possible that we will see it.

Now if only Zen came out as a surprise and ran at 95W! Things would be different. Maybe if you don't mind a 4 core - 8 threads Zen, we will easily see those at much lower TDP. Probably we can see 45W and 65W parts. That's totally different story.

I have an undervolted Athlon II x4 605E for my HTPC. Undervolted, it goes like 40W. It's ridiculously easy to cool even with cooler like the Scythe Schuriken. Zens like that would be great for HTPC solutions.

With the NB and SB being on-die I would assume the potential is there.

will we see a TRUE high end board in this form factor, I doubt it. for the simple reason...

1x pcie slot.

AMD seems to be more invested in multi GPU as of late.

mainstream intel can get away with it. due to only 16 pcie lanes,

I expect the pcie lane offering to exceed the mere 28 you get with inital 2011-3 chips

Matx boards.. they will go whole ham..

Itx i don't see anything being more than mainstream boards in this class

Of course you'll see high end mini-itx boards for Zen/AM4. Power isn't an issue, there are 6+2 Z170 mini-itx boards right now, there is even one mini-itx X99 board. If they think there is a market for it they will build it, don't necessarily expect it to be cheap though.

That is a big if.

"don't necessarily expect it to be cheap though"

I don't buy anything cheap. You get what you pay for.

You can tattoo that on my big, left cheek kiddo cheers.gif .

I would even be happy with a Gaming Matx model if that's possible because I'm getting sick of always buying Intel gear, I want some change for the future and we desperately need AMD back with some gusto.

Would love to have an AMD system back on my desk soon.

How big will the AM4 chips be? If they're Intel HEDT size I guess maybe not so many ITX boards will be available frown.gif
