Looking for laptop recommendation, very special needs.

Hello everyone,

I'm turning toward the community for recommendation.

Here's the situation: I do hydroplane racing live stream during the summer. Most of the time, I'm out in the wilderness with my cameraman and his camera hooked up to my laptop. As summer implies, sometime it's really hot outside and beside a cooling pad and a custom booth to give it some shade, my trusty T520 is having a really hard time keeping up with the conditions and tends to throttle a lot. For reference, I may be outside with my laptop from 9AM to 7PM on a bad racing day with multiple delays to give you an example.

I currently run my live stream through Wirecast and I broadcast it on YouTube. Since this year we got new sponsors and we're working directly with the organization in charge of racing, we've been asked to add a lot of content to our stream. So basically, I've almost doubled my shots within wirecast and I've been asked to run ads, interviews and promos side by side with our camera still running. My encoder is set up to encode at 480p (720p+ is not an option most of the places we go because LTE signal is not powerful enough) within Wirecast but most of the stuff I've been supplied to run alongside are 720p or 1080p so it's taxing the hardware really bad.

Fast forward last weekend, first weekend of racing, computer started to throttle as soon as we reached 27-28C outside because it was obviously working harder than usual. My saving grace was a light breeze who was kicking in from time to time to give me a hand cooling it.

Current Laptop Spec:

Lenovo T520
Intel Core i5 2520M
4GB RAM
256GB HyperX SSD

I will have the green light to buy a new laptop in a couple of days with a budget of 1500-2000 CAD$. I'll be looking to find something with the specifications below and to future proof our buy for 2-3 years. We're stuck at streaming at 480p most of the places we go due to bad LTE signals. We might have 1 race where we can do 720p at best with the Internet we have there if we are lucky. 1080p+ is totally out of the question.

Here's the specification I was looking for :

- Core i7 6700HQ (preferably) or better.
- 8/16GB RAM
- USB 3.0 connectivity / SD Card reader. 3 USB connectors is the minimum with one of them being 3.0.
- 15" is the ideal size, 17" is not out of the question but would seriously be tough carrying around. I'm already loaded and I can't really afford having a bigger laptop.
- Mandatory: Good cooling capabilities
- Mandatory: Spill Proof! I'm out in the rain sometime and boats with 1200HP engine leaving docks can, and will, cover you in water if you are on the wrong spot at the wrong time!
- Mandatory: Laptop body needs to be made of reflective or cooler material to absorb the least amount of heat as possible. The T520 black plastic is taking a beating out in the sun. If need be, the laptop could be wrapped in white.

SSD could be transplanted from my T520 to the new laptop so I don't care if the laptop comes with a crappy 500GB drive.

For example, I was eye-balling the XPS 15 Non Touch. It pretty much got everything I need plus I can buy the accidental warranty. I'm usually against extra warranties but trust me, in this case, it's a god send and is a factor that will be considered.

If you guys have any recommendation, it would be very appreciated!

I would go with the dell precision line. Get prosupport + accidental coverage.

I've used a few different models for the past 5-6 years. The laptops are decent and well built, the support is amazing. It's better than anything they offer with the non business line of laptops.

I'll have a look at it, it seems very interesting. I'm a bit concerned with the thermals outside but, like I said, I can get that thing wrapped in white. The accidental damage warranty would be very useful in this case too. Thanks for the suggestion!
