The Chinko Nature Reserve is a pristine area lying in the center of Africa, unperturbed for millennia by civilization. Located in the southeastern part of the Central African Republic, the reserve is over 400 miles from the country’s capital, Bangui, to the west and touches South Sudan to the east.

The reserve is home to dozens of species, including African elephants, Lelwel hartebeests and leopards. These animals are under constant threat by ivory poachers, bushmeat sellers and armed cattle herdsmen from Sudan. A nonprofit called the Chinko Project resides in the reserve to educate the herdsmen and monitor poachers via planes. But in the past week, the Chinko Project has been dealt with an unexpected threat: Microsoft.

Last week, Chinko Project’s computers discreetly downloaded 17.4 gigabytes of Microsoft’s Windows 10 software, because Microsoft has been upgrading Windows 7 and 8 computers to the software’s latest version when the machines are set to accept automatic updates. In the United States, such downloads are hardly a big deal. But considering the nonprofit pays its satellite internet provider by the megabyte for downloads, over 17,400 megabytes could cost the cash-strapped organization up to $87,000 in one estimation.

I don't get why the part about it being a nonprofit organisation had to be added, for the pity factor I guess? If these people are in a place where data is costing them that much to download, perhaps they shouldn't have automatic updates enabled in the first place. The fact that it is Windows 10 is rather irrelevant here, more the fact that they haven't turned off automatic updates when they're on an expensive network. The non profit part and Windows 10 part are unnecessary clickbait really

Redundant or not, you still get the "oh microsoft" feeling every time you see another thread like this.
BTW, isn't automatic updates are somethings a few hundred MBs of data even without windows 10 install files? So if they wanted to same money, they should have disabled updates completely.

technically still their fault

You are not free to use whatever OS and it has been a lie for over a couple of decades by now.

Using linux without the knowledge, even with some of the packages available, will limit you in terms of what programs you can use or how to install some products. Especially if mostly the free or given free products are only windows based, because lets be honest here, most programs are being written solely to windows.

And using OSX also requires you to purchase an apple product, which incur extra frees sometimes, and if the organisation is getting their hardware for free, they can't be pickers and say "we are non-profit, we want donations, but please make it apple only".
And hackintosh is still something definitely not for everyone.

So they have what they have. It doesn't mean they need to be punished for it.
Even now at 2016, linux can not rival windows in terms of simple-stupid, and OS X is mostly too expensive hardware wise for people who get their hardware mostly for free.
