LOL. Read the EULA for any version of Windows. You sign your rights of managing updates away when you click "I Agree".

Windows Vista -> 10 can update even if you have it disabled with the basic GUI.

This pisses me off greatly as I donate yearly to the Chinko project to support their cause, and now that donation is wasted on this garbage thanks to Microsoft.

No it is not their fault as Microsoft allowed the setup files to be downloaded without user agreement through updates.

I strongly feel that Microsoft should reimburse the project for the cost of the unwarranted data usage that they cost the organization.

And we should just sit around and accept the EULAs? They are not legally binding.. At least for some cases which have been heard before if i can dig it up.

Should Google reimburse people when idiots on the network spend all day on youtube before remembering they are over their data cap?

The EULA tells you what to expect from the software. If you dont like it, dont agree and dont use the software. Your argument is the exact reason why Windows is still the OS market leader on the PC platform. People think MS owes them the software with no stipulations. If you want that, git gud and go to Linux.

Competent IT staff of some form could have made that a possibility for them. AFAIC, ALL non-profits should be using FOSS.

That's interesting. I was unawares.

I get why people don't like W10. Truly, I do. But if your concerns about that OS are that great, choose another product.

It really is that simple. I've done it several times in my "computing career."

EDIT:

Also, my organization is on W7 and will continue to be for some time. Haven't had any issues what-so-ever with being forced fed W10. I wonder why my organization is so special......hmmm.

I don't think what you are talking about is relevant to what Aslan is talking about.

Windows 10 setups are being downloaded without the user's explicit consent. And an idiot spending all day on youtube differs from someone who doesn't sift through every single (some of which obscurely documented) update in order to weed out any potential W10 downloaders.... of whose existence he may even be unaware of since you don't get to read about it anywhere.

If updates are on, it gets downloaded. Kill the windows update service and, like magic, the downloads DON'T HAPPEN.

You do not reimburse user error.
