EDIT:

Also, let me be clear. Is what MS doing with W10 annoying? Certainly. But over the years, I've transitioned from a TRS-80, C64, Tandy EX, Amiga 500, 386Dx25 etc, with numerous operating systems. I'm the "OG" Windows hater. I was a DOS elitist for many years. But the GUI OSes took over. I eventually had to choose to move on and so I did.

Get use to it. It's the nature of this business. Something 20 years from now is going to piss off another generation and you'll be like "been there, done that." Got to roll with it and make choices best for you and your uses.

My simple question is for you:
Have you ever had your OS demand that you move to another OS?
Was moving forward was ever forced on you and not you deciding "well I should move on"?
Have you ever had zero problems and everything was working fine, and you had no real need to move to another OS, you did not plan to, and suddenly you got up in the morning and you had?

I have to disagree.
Wanting to automatically get security updates and recommended fixes, does not mean "I want to get a 17GB of completely different OS, which might or might not break some of my current programs, or now force me to do reinstalls or change locations of files or data".
Even OSX gives you the option to not upgrade. And we all know how apple are pushing things.

You could set something like that up to run 24/7 in a vehicle. It could even provide secure WiFi access for their other devices.

We have HAM guys around here with no real PC experience that build 2.4ghz WiFi mesh repeaters (from off the shelf WiFi routers no less) that are in weather tight boxes, they run off of solar panels and batteries. You just need to do the research and follow simple instructions.

You are talking about people who don't necessarily know or understand how to problem solve all that during a 30km hike to a location, send photos from there, and hike back.
All they want is something that works. Thats it. That they can plug and play everything brainlessly. Even the satellite phone connection to the computer they got 20 minutes before they went to the hike and had no time to find linux drivers for it or setting it up on their old laptop.

And saying that linux is on the same simplicity level as windows, is completely delusional.

ROFL. You're so stockholmed you didn't even read and comprehend what I wrote and what another user already replied to you about. I asked if one could make hardline ethernet connections metered knowing the answer was no (at least without some pointless hackery) and you got so riled up going for an ad hominem that you missed everything.

PS: I like Win10 as it really is the best Windows has been. I'm using it right now and have my WiFi connection setup to metered. Unfortunately, I have to manually do that for every new wifi point.

While I'm not a fan of Microsoft's Win10 upgrade practices...

The 'Chinko Project ' needs to find hardware/software more suitable to their needs.

Like take this quote: “If a forced upgrade happened and crashed our PCs while in the middle of coordinating rangers under fire from armed militarized poachers, blood could literally be on [Microsoft’s] hands.”

No, No it couldnt. Microsoft's commerical operating systems are not suitable for Military, Hospital, or any other mission critical, life threatening situations.

...that has nothing to do with the subject. Wow you m$ fanboys are getting absurd.

Anyhow, this is mostly the fault of the organization, don't enable your automatic updates. However it's also the fault of microsoft for having the upgrade to windows 10 labelled as an update and then pre-downloading that much data.

It wasn't malicious, it's just a mistake someone made on the reserve and microsoft isn't understanding a basic concept.

Win10 is a whole lot like having a phallus. It's okay to have one, it's okay to be proud. It's NOT okay to shove it down everyone's throat without permission.

Technically, that doesn't matter. If that scenario happened and the ONLY reason why the system crashed was because of a forced update...that's mostly the fault of microsoft using shady upgrade practices. Should the reserve be using windows for this? Probably not - but that doesn't absolve Microsoft from their responsibility in this matter. Microsoft are benign in their intent but in their frantic push to have everyone adopt win10, they're creating issues where there was none before. They're being a little short sighted about what they're doing.

The fact that it is Windows 10 is rather irrelevant here, more the fact that they haven't turned off automatic updates when they're on an expensive network. The non profit part and Windows 10 part are unnecessary clickbait really

And to add

If having the systems running is that critical, you wouldn't want to have auto updates period.
