[Newsweek] Microsoft’s ‘malware-like’ Windows 10 automatic upgrades cost anti-poaching nonprofit thousands, group says - Page 9

I see both sides of the argument, but in the end it is really the non-profit's fault. The automatic installation of Windows 10 as a recommended update isn't a new thing and has been well documented. If this company was really worried about how critical their systems are, they would have someone on the staff managing updates. It doesn't even have to be someone full time. Maybe someone who works an hour or two every week checking all of their systems and managing updates.

It is unfortunate that they have a metered connection, but even still there should be some type of alert when it gets past a certain point. I find it hard to believe that no one was keeping an eye on the amount of data used and let it rack up to $80,000. Again, if it is that costly, you would save money by having someone monitor that connection at least once a day.

False equivalence smart guy. Try again.

Linux has apps for most every need. Go try Ubuntu, Ive already transitioned most of my computer illiterate customers to it.

All they want is something that works. Thats it. That they can plug and play everything brainlessly. Even the satellite phone connection to the computer they got 20 minutes before they went to the hike and had no time to find linux drivers for it or setting it up on their old laptop.

And saying that linux is on the same simplicity level as windows, is completely delusional.

Read the above. And "That they can plug and play everything brainlessly" is not an excuse. That is a symptom of people with no forethought who should not be running a NGO. If it is unacceptable in a business, its unacceptable in a NGO. Nobody gets special passes because of the industry or field they are in.

I'm actually surprised that you can even download 17gb over sat... they've got a pretty good provider..

I fired my win10 laptop up for the first time in a week to watch a twitch stream. I was met with severe interface stutter/freezing. Task manager showed my CPU and SSD getting hammered to 100% but the culprit was hidden in the list. Auto-updates? anyway after 15min or so of frustration I hard powered down and ended up reinstalled 8.1 that night.

Yeah, I can see why this happen and the pain of satellite (I'm on satellite myself, though thank goodness I don't get charged by the MB). I think what most here forget is the majority of people using these computers only care for one thing, "Power on and go". I'm serious, go ask the average person if they know how to use the control panel, change the update settings, power settings, etc. Most won't know what the heck you are talking about. Even peeps in the career field I am in the Guard which is a computer field don't know how to set certain things up like RAID or even know about overclocking or going into BIOS unless there a book telling them what to do.

I'm currently taking one class that on basic computer fundamentals and MS office products (it require for my degree even though I already took higher CS classes). I pass the test with ease, but all the others act like it was the end of the world and the test to them was hard. And the test was on basic computer parts, how to use W8, and basic stuff about security like virus, etc. The teacher said on average most only get a C on the test. That tells you right there what the knowledge level of people are on computers. Reason they need to really start making computer class in school more than a typing class and how to use MS Word (no kidding, that what it was in High School for me).

Heck, I remember when in active duty AF was switching over to W7. We had a whole bunch of people complaining about W7. I mean, W7!!! Can't remember how many other mechanics kept coming to me asking where things where or how to get to certain things because they where use to doing a certain pattern to get to something on XP. Even when GO81 went through three changes, people threw a fit. The majority just don't like changes that much especially when they just want it to work and get their job done.

And do you REALLY think that someone living in rural freaking africa is going to even be aware of that detail???

The developing world is not as in-touch with technology as we are, let alone the details of how it works.

Lets try to be realistic here.

Well, the problem is not limited to developing countries... NOT having the problem due to having the knowledge/awareness is limited to a small group of people more commonly found in developed countries.

Unless you follow the whole Win 10 push situation closely, even if you're familiar with the Win7/8 system update source code there's no way you can anticipate daily *MB updates suddenly turning into 3GB+.

It is black and white, its their fault or it is not. There is no excusing this ignorant behavior. Do I get a second chance when I accidentally forget to disable app updates on my phone? Can I sue Google or Apple for the overage costs? Oh wait, I don't and I can't.

You don't get to absolve their responsibility because they are a NGO or because Microsoft is involved. Its a misappropriation of funds, plain and simple.

These people literally put their lives on the line for the work they do. They shouldn't have to worry about their entire OS just going through and updating by itself.

The fact that MS are pushing windows 10 as an auto update is pretty messed up on it own, but the way they've gone about it is disgusting.

I need to remember that if I ever work for the local FD. "We put our lives on the line, we cant be asked to do proper IT to maintain our first response software and hardware."

They have an IT staff member and a Law consultant, no reason this could not have been fixed.
