Trying to use Third Party Router with Sky Broadband/Fibre (UK)

Thread Starter
Wondering if anyone would be able to assist with this situation I have at the moment. I have a Sky Fibre broadband package which comes with their own router/modem combo, the SR102.

But after having so many ragequits due to huge ping spikes and terrible download speeds, and even complaining to Sky so they sent another router out, but this was the same as the other so I've decided to ditch their router and try something else. I was assured by the guy in the store that this would work with Sky fibre but it hasn't so far...

I bought the Asus DSL-N55U ADSL Modem Router Wireless-n600 and it was promising extremely easy set up, but that is not the case...

I used Wireshark to retrieve my Sky User/Password as some forums have mentioned that this is needed, but I've found nowhere to be able to input this information. I can disconnect my normal Router/modem combo the SR102 and then connect the Asus, and then I went to the homepage of the new router 192.168.1.1 and I got the Asus GUI it started to load the quick set up wizard, but could not find a DSL connection this was when I selected the Annex A option of the quick set up..So I tried Annex B and that gave the same issue, it could not find a DSL connection...

At this point I was trying to play about with some of the settings but nothing seemed to change anything, or find any way to input my ISP details (The Username/Password)

Now some forums have suggested that I would need another separate modem to connect the Asus to, but to me that doesn't make sense seeing as the Sky Router is a combo of Router/Modem and so is the new Asus?

Someone help please!!!

EDIT: I've also updated the new Asus routers Firmware to the latest version and it still won't find a DSL connection.

If it's like here in the States, you'll have to contact your ISP and give them the MAC address of the ASUS router/modem.

The option to put in the SKY username/password is only available after it has detected the connection if you are using the quick internet setup on the router
As for not being able to connect you would need to figure out whether you are meant to be connecting using pppoa or MER and then that should help you figure out what you need to do to make it connect.

Thanks for the responses, over the last week or so, I've tried two routers with no success, one was an Asus N600 I believe and one was a TP Link one, both of which didn't work.

After more digging it turned out that they do not support Option 61 on DHCP which is apparently what Sky Fibre needs, so after some more digging it seems that unless you get some kind of non mainstream 'specialised' router or a ludicrously expensive router like a Netgear Nighthawk which does support Option 61 it isn't possible...

So I've given up trying as I can't afford one of the above, thought I would have been able to do it with a normal router but alas, it doesn't seem that way.

My one worked asus ac 3200 with Sky Fibre
Once you retrieved the password from sky
You need BT open reach modem, connect the wan port from the Asus to the bt open reach modem, from their input the setup, you may need merlin firmware

There are youtube videos too, may need up to 40 minutes for connection check the forums

I would rather just use Asus as a wireless access point

1) connect sky and asus together using ethernet,

2) select acess point on asus or disable dhcp on asus

3) once connection and broadband has been established disable wireless on the sky

Now you have wireless access via asus router

Plus you can use asus discovery tool to still change router settings

But I don't see why I need a BT Open Reach Modem when the routers I've chosen have built in modem's like the Sky SR102?

It's still not an ADSL connection. You need a separate modem and then a fibre compatible router. You can probably use the Sky hub thing as a modem then just have that feed into whatever router you want. I use an Asus RT-N66U on my FTTC connection, but I also have a ECI Telecom - B-Focus modem as I'm with Zen, it's one of the two openreach options. I'd assume you could buy one of those, and run it on a Sky connection along with whatever router you want.

If you're getting huge ping spikes and low speeds, chances are it's not on your internal network but likely at the local exchange. I'm not sure if you can enable ping responses on the Sky hub, but if you can I'd recommend setting up a ping graph at fruk.net and at thinkbroadband.com. Then you'll be able to see what your connection is doing at all times of the day, you may have congestion at the exchange at peak times causing packet loss and a drop of download speed. I'd run a bunch of speed tests throughout the day, either with speedtest.net or thinkbroadband.com and keep the logs just to make sure.
