Yikes, and there are at least 2 people on OCN who have quad 1080gtx already.... I figured it was a gamble, i wonder if this will be the normal line going forward with new units after the 1080

I don't know anything about graphics driver development but for me it's hard to imagine that the cost of developing 3/4-way profiles is that much more, when you already have 2-way profiles.

Tri-SLI and Quad-SLI drivers are a nightmare to code, they have the most problems, and only benefit a tiny sliver of the customer base.

I'm sure AMD would love to do this too but I have a feeling they're going to spin it as an edge over the competition, especially in the prosumer/small business area where you see a lot of 3 and 4 card solutions being used for large/multiple multimedia displays.

Those are not run in SLI. Each card runs it's own display.

Enabling 3 and 4 way SLI will be possible in future drivers, so if NVIDIA doesn't enable some DX11 and pre-game profiles, I bet you can still make your own SLI profile for older games to get them to work with 3/4 way with NVIDIA inspector. That's how it was a lot of the time in the past anyway. Also, developers can still code for 3 and 4 way SLI in their games. Although, I don't think anyone outside of benchmarks will actually do that since it's a really tiny percentage of people.

As someone who has had about seven 4-way SLI/Crossfire setups in the past, I am glad they are focusing on 2-way SLI and the HB bridge. It's really the smartest move.

I've lost the desire for 4 Way SLI now, like you i've done it several times over the years and it's just meh. Since ditching 2 of my Titan X's my system is just 200 fold better in terms of fluidity of gameplay and overall system quirkeness is gone.

Although i wish they'd fix the dog slow responsiveness of the NCP. It's bloody awful these days....
