Further, 2-Way SLI cannot run 60FPS even in 4K on ALL games maxed out - I've done plenty of gaming/benchmarks to know this.

Here's Fallout 4 w/ a bunch of mods including ENB @ 5K with everything maxed out on 2x GTX-1080 FE @ 2050 / 5508:

Most of the time during gameplay, it's between 20 - 22 FPS which is horrendous. 4-Way SLI should have yielded north of 50FPS which is quite playable.

Your monitors are way ahead of gpu power right now. We all know that 4 way sli would have only netted you another 10fps tops, no reason to pretend that it would have scaled perfectly.

I never trust it when anyone ever says maxed out because most people tend to leave something out, most often AA

Totally agree. When I say "maxed out" you can rest assured I mean that everything is on MAX in the game...

nope.

amd will still have 4 way crossfire and it's a lot less restrictive than sli.

This a shame, i was seriously eyeballing 1080's 4k+ fps and benches. I was hoping for gains here as a high res user myself. These types of data points are almost impossible to get anywhere. +rep for sharing, as a 4 way user(CF). Many people here love to talk down multi gpu and high resolutions. The fact that most people are running 1440p or lower, and single gpus is one thing. The contempt they post against people who do extreme setups is really sad. The fact remains simple if there are no strides made on the enthusiasts levels then they are getting the same treatment as well. I like to tweak and tinker with my setups, i like pushing the envelope and trying unconventional routes on PC gaming. PC gaming is becoming a shadow of consoles as from every angle were being reduced to simple hardware.

I really don't see why nvidia cannot still allow 4 way sli in the nvpanel and just not support it. I mean at least give people a chance to use it and tweak it themselves with nvidia inspector and the like. In the end it's really disheartening to see more features removed from PC gaming.

It could be as simple as the cost of developing drivers to work in 3 way and 4 way sli is not offset by the amount of users who buy 3 or 4 gpus. Maybe they are banking on DX12 MDA taking care of it for them. Either way it still does not justify stopping support for it IMO.

How would spending more on drivers than you make on 3rd and 4th GPUS not justify stopping development on it? Anyway, LDA explicit mode kind of makes this all irrelevant.

...yeah, DX12 MDA (multi display adapters and explicit linked display adapter) is what I was looking for in an earlier post here.

It also seems that the LED lit SLI bridges some vendors introduced over the last few years will work with 1080s (according to PC World anyways). Still, NVdia's move to offer 3 and 4 way SLI support for 1080s in some benches (only) adds insult to injury, IMO (though that also suggests that a registry hack and/or NVidia. inspector profiles might help 'unofficially' with some games).

But all that said, NVidia is sending a bad signal to game developers (whose work on 3 and 4 way SLI was already less than stellar to begin with). When I spoke to a vendor rep yesterday on s.th.else, he suggested (rumor?) that the underlying reason for NVidia's Pascal multi GPU support decision related to VR getting a big support push instead...

Are you serious?

Game developers support of either SLI and CFX has been shady for so many years (over a decade).
We still have games barely support SLI or CFX and developers decide to omit that completely in some cases, developers giving excuses and just claim it is not worth the hassle of further development, many cases rejecting offers from either AMD or nvidia to help add support.

So I actually think it is the opposite. Since game developers barely really develop with multi GPU in their mind, so many games have such horrible scaling to anything over 2-way, that it just makes on sense for nvidia to put a large amount of man hours to optimise drivers for 3-way and 4-way when there is no really support from the developers themselves.
It will be even more noticeable in DX12. Unless the developer adds in its code support for multi GPU, there is nothing either AMD or Nvidia can do about it (and driver wise they don't need to add 2-3-4 way SLIs).

So 4K surround with 4-way SLI will take a hit. Again, that is such a small market, I don't see it as a big issue. Annoying? Yes, issue, not a big one.

As previous owner of 4-way SLI and CFX, tbh, it just not worth it overall. I do understand that some people do, and some people want, and some will utilise it. But overall, business wise, its understandable that it is not worth it today as it used to in the past.

Since it looks like AMD don't seem to be bringing any high performance card, and with 2-way SLI really killing the benchmarks at 2-way at 4K, nvidia aren't going to have to worry about it for at least a few good months until they start to get the larger cards ready. Then we might see the return of 3/4-way SLI for the big cards.

If you remember, nvidia didn't really support over 3-way on the 980s. And on the 980 TI and fury x, many games showed 0%-10% increase in performance of adding a 3rd card over 2-way, sometimes adding a 4th card gave the same FPS as 2-way.
So what will be the real point if even if you could add a 4th card, it will not increase your performance in more than a few games?

Are they really that greedy? Forcing people to buy Titan Y to run 3 and 4 card SLI? It's not enough that people pay a premium for the SLI certified motherboard, now they are blocking 3-4 way SLI on mid-high end cards too? Nvidia's greediness knows no bound. I hope someone buys ATI (or RTG now) from AMD so they can put out some really competitive stuff. Maybe Samsung?
