Power consumption notes on my FX-8350 system with 970 SSCs in SLI

Thread Starter
HI all,
I just thought I'd post some findings of my power consumption using my system. I found a Reliance Controls AmWatt Appliance Load Tester, so these are what the findings are from.

Currently, I've got 3 hard drives, a dvd drive, and an SSD in the computer with 4 fans turning besides the cpu cooler.
Like I said, the cpu is an FX-8350 at stock clocks with turbo boost enabled. It is on an AsRock 990FX Extreme9 board.
16GB of HyperX Fury at 1866mhz stock timings. Two EVGA 970 SSC's in SLI.

As I am typing this, my power use fluctuates between 140 and 155 watts. Although when loading a new webpage or opening up Steam or another program, it jumps up to anywhere in the 200 watt range, and gets close to 300watts.

I then went ahead and ran Elder Scrolls V Skyrim with some basic mods and it jumped up to around 350watts sometimes closer to at certain points, but not often.

Then I exited Skyrim.

I ran Prime95 and power consumption stayed around 320 watts to 340 watts.

Then as I left prime95 running, I launched Furmark and ran a 1080p benchmark. FPS was low for the beginning of the test, and then as it smoothed out, power consumption shot up to a max of around 730watts and then anywhere between 680 and 720watts.

So there ya go, that was my little test. smile.gif

Have any of you done stuff like that? It is nice to know that I'm not burning up the juice when I'm just browsing the web, ya know? And I don't even really push the system hard when it is in game. But woah there Furmark, you give it a kick, but I have a PC Power n Cooling 950w Silencer MKII so I wasn't concerned with hitting my limit.

Any thoughts?

Did you remember to take the efficiency of the numbers you got from the wall?
If you did not then your system is not using 730 watts its using around 600-650 watt.

Oh! Yes I'm sorry, I put the meter before the power conditioner I have my tower on. So at that time, it was also powering two 22" lcd monitors and a 2.1 speaker system. Forgot to mention also, I have an illuminated razer anansi keyboard and a case led strip...which wouldn't contribute much to that number.

With the monitor and speakers added as well you system would not go much if any above 600 watt.

I just ran the scenario again. With only Furmark running a Stress Test, the range was in the 560 to 570watt range, as you stated.

But with both Prime95 and Furmark running, the load tester again read out wattages from the 660's to the 710's and lots in between. I don't have a reason to doubt the appliance load tester...

Some of the reason I mention this is to test out power consumption and possibly move to a single card sometime soon.

Your system with the efficiency taken off is about 625 watts give or take a little either way.

Oh I see what you mean, so that's what the draw is through my 80 plus silver power supply, right? But the components are only getting around 625 watts. I see what u mean.
