Warning: Servers Not Handing Out CPU WUs to 4,6,8+ Core CPU+GPU with Default Settings - Empty work server assignment / Could not get an assignment

I've just found this out after I noticed that for the last few days, my CPU has been sitting idle. Pretty much, if your client is set to a prime number of cores, or -1, where the client is supposed to set the number of cores, you might not be getting any new work. Apparently the servers aren't issuing work if the number of CPUs is set to 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, etc.

I have a 6 core/12 thread CPU and one GPU (a 980Ti) so with the client set to -1, it was calculating number of cores, minus one core for the GPU, so it was reporting 11 cores to the server, so I wasn't getting any WUs at all.

If you want to make sure you keep getting WUs, go in and set your CPU client to an even number of CPUs. If you have a 4 core/8 thead CPU, you'll have to decide if you want to set it to 6 or 8 threads, whether you want to keep a thread free for your GPU. 6/12 will have to be 10 or 12, 8/16 will have to be 14 or 16, 10/20 will have to be 18 or 20, etc.

Be sure to check your clients to see if you're getting CPU WUs and manually set the number of CPUs to avoid this issue.

According to a Reddit post, PG is talking about a new client, but don't say when it'll be out yet: https://www.reddit.com/r/foldingathome/comments/4mlsdk/best_computers_get_no_work_older_pcs_still_do/

Running a prime count or multiple of a prime has never been a good idea. 14 is not commended either.

Vijay mentioned a new core, I don't expect a new client. Seems its on the wish list vs actually being worked on. Its been said over and over that client work is taking a back seat to science.

Well, this is more a warning that if you leave the v7 client set to -1, which is the default, to pick the number of cores, it'll subtract 1 for your GPU client and try to get 7, 11, etc. core WUs. Up until a few days ago, I was getting WUs just fine, so it took me a bit to figure out why it was saying there were no WUs available, since it wasn't immediately obvious that the "automatic" option was asking for 11 core WUs. Just figured it would be good to let everyone know since this is a relatively recent change, and it would be a shame to lose folding power because the -1 setting is causing issues.

And, yes, sorry, I misspoke. I meant core. From what I've read, they're hoping that if it's set to 7 and no 7 core WUs available, the new core will run on 6 cores instead of just sitting there doing nothing.

EDIT: As a note, looking through my logs, it looks like the last CPU WU I downloaded was 2016-05-30 17:36Z and then at 2016-05-30 19:09Z, I started getting the "Empty work server assignment"/"Could not get an assignment" errors. Unfortunately, I didn't notice until today that my CPU hadn't been doing any folding, so I lost about 10 days worth of CPU work. Just wanted to give a heads-up so other folks can check and make sure that this doesn't affect them as well.

If I am correct from what I am reading. You should use even numbers? I am returning back to the scene again, so a 8/16 core and I will probably use 14 if that is correct.

That would be correct but will need to be adjusted if you are also folding with multiple GPU's.

14 is blocked from some projects as well as it is 2x a prime. Safest bet is 12 or 16.

Listen to @mmonnin He reads the Stanford Folding Forum and other folding forums and he does know his facts. thumb.gif
