How to make power plan settings permanent?

Thread Starter
I'm on Windows 10 and I haven't used Windows in 6 years but when I used Win7 I never had this issue and I can't find a fix for it.

Essentially, the main problem is that for some reason the changes I make to power plans don't stick. The strange thing is that only the processor power management settings change. For instance, if I change the minimum state to 0% sometime later it will be changed to some other number (I've seen 50%-100%). But what's most concerning is that since I'm on a fanless laptop the system cooling policy should be set to passive yet it gets changed to active and combined with the changed minimum processor state of 100% this laptop gets rather hot even at idle.

When I went looking I found threads dating as far back as WinVista discussing this issue but I had never experienced it before and no one really had an explanation or way to fix it. So, my question to you guys is how would I fix this? I'd really like to not be required to constantly check and change the power settings I set all the time.

If its a laptop i say unplug it and set it and then plug it in and set it and see if it stays, windows keep 2 profiles for each. If it changes still then it sounds like windows just being a dick. ive had issues with 10 with it nearly destroying my raid 0 setup and with my lock screen just plain not working for no reason. Hopefully the issues get resolved with the coming anniversary edition. I apologize i dont have much more to try. assuming you have admin permissions it should just stick no questions asked. but win 10 doesnt like playing nice. its the playground bully half the time lol.

Are you saying two versions of the plans or the two settings under battery and plugged in? For me eventually the settings under any power plan for either battery or plugged in will change to 100% minimum processor state, Active cooling policy, and 100% maximum power state. That's the problem I'm having and the problem people have complained about since WinVista. I still haven't found any sort of fix for this and it just amazes me that no one else on here seems to have noticed it.

Thanks InverseTundra for the suggestion anyway. I feel bad complaining about a power plan issue when you're suffering data loss like that.

I see you are a Linux 'Enthusiast' , I too am a Linux 'Enthusiast'. thumb.gif
But in regards to the power plan I think InverseTundra is correct about the 2 different profiles for when plugged in and when not, My old Hp laptop did that so yours might be the same thumb.gif

That's not what I'm asking about. I'm asking why me changing the settings of a power plan like the minimum, maximum, and cooling method, under "On battery" and "Plugged in" under the plan/profile like "Balanced" is constantly changed.

PS: I'm a heavy Linux user but stuck using Windows on this laptop until a point release of buntu comes with either the 4.5 or 4.6 kernel so everything works on it.

I luckily didnt lose anything. as soon as the issues started i backed up all the data and broke the array and used the drives separately. it was 2 500gb wd blacks. i just upgraded off both to a 480gb adata ssd for the speed. i like raid but i need a break for it bit till windows 10 gets itself sorted out haha. If the power plan keeps changing the only thing i can think is either its windows doing it or the computers bios. try to enter the bios and see if there are any options that are on that shouldnt be or might be causing the issues? its the only other thing i can think of outside of a bs windows bug that micro**** is incapable of fixing.

Me neither, stupid thing keeps doing it and it happens more often when I shutdown windows instead of put it to sleep.

As for our side topic; I could never get into Gnome because I fell in love with KDE and LXDE. I'm actually hoping that LXQT turns out as awesome as it is supposed to be because I'd love a low power DE that has the best features of KDE (present windows/expose').

Hmm...what year were those WD blacks?
I checked my BIOS/UEFI and found nothing. I'm still checking if there's "secret" menus like there were on my old netbook but I think OEMs stopped doing that kind of thing.

And what I'm finding amusing is that this bug has a history over 10 years old and I guess because it doesn't happen to everyone MS can feel like ignoring it.

I've tried everything I can think of but Intel's thermal management engine doesn't seem to have any connection with the problem (in fact I'm betting it would be setting the power settings in the opposite direction) and while some have claimed it's because of Windows Updates my settings change long after Windows checks for updates. I just continue to scratch my head as to how an OS that is supposedly so "easy" to use is this messed up.

They are dated 07 July 2011. They are specifically Western Digital Scorpio Black drive. WD5000BEKT. they were from my previous computer that was a msi gaming laptop. but they were formatted and set into the raid fresh on the new system. windows 10 is just a buggy mess still. sucks there arent fixes for stuff like this.
