[ExtremeTech] British startup wants to help landlords, employers spy on you via social media

One of the disturbing trends we’ve covered at ExtremeTech over the past few years is the degree to which companies spy on customers, end-users, and people who shop for things. Much of this monitoring is done covertly with minimal disclosure, to help ensure that customers don’t become aware of how their casual habits have been data mined and tracked. One British startup, Score Assured, wants to make that mining explicit and required for anyone looking for a place to live or a job, via Tenant Assured and Recruit Assured, respectively.
Quote:
Elsewhere, the website describes how this service works. A tenant is asked to log into their social media profiles on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram accounts via Tenant Assured’s secure portal. The accounts themselves are then scraped for the following information:

ID discrepancies
Locational misrepresentation
Applicant’s 5 biggest personality traits
Employment verification
Credit affordability
Date of birth confirmation
High risk language alerts – pets, smoking etc
Payment date approximation
New to country alert
Applicant hobby/property suitability
Best time to contact

Tenant Assured’s entire pitch is that it can use all of this information along with your credit history, driver’s license, and payment histories to create a better, more informed profile, which your landlord than peruses to see if they want to rent to you or not.

Source.

One more day in Brave New World.

Successful project right there. Provide your login credentials to a company you've never seen before so that they can spy on you. As far as creepy goes, this is certainly in the top ten. Also, what happened to the good old advice of "Don't provide your login credentials to third parties." ?

So its optional opt-in unless a landlord or employer requires it... Still see this as a massive fail. Next to nobody will volunteer to have their info stolen and used to discriminate against them for no reason. Landlord making it a requirement? I can see the amount of vacancies in a complex that does this explode as noone would want to do this to rent when they don't have to do this for any other place. Similar to employers, who would apply for a job that requires this? It would seem shady as heck.

While I can see it work slightly better for employers forcing this as people want jobs, I still can't see this being considered acceptable. How many qualified applicants do they think will simply "pass" on the job and go apply elsewhere due to such a ridiculous practice?

Unless comapnies started doing this en masse, I can't see it gaining traction. That and the fact that policies for social media sites like Facebook say you are not allowed and should not give out your contact info.

This kind business is a plague and needs to be exterminated.

Blood, sweat, and tears to have a job and place to live these days. I wouldn't know because I'm still in college, but things are looking rather bleak to me. It doesn't help that I live in an area that's one of the worst for employment (apparently 100 people apply per job opening, according to some newspaper business survey).

I don't even use Steam any more... I remember reading an article a while back where researchers linked not having a facebook account to increased likelihood of being a psychopath.

Link that research with my inability to sign up for a service like this due to not having social media accounts and I guess I'd never get a job or place to live ever again frown.gif

it doesn't have to be legal.

try getting an apartment in a big city.

I've seen like 50 people visiting a flat for rent and the realtor asked people for money to increase their chances of getting the apartment.

Too many people want to live in a big city, rent has exploded, more ways are being found to "sort out" good candidates.

It's not a fair process. If you don't play by their rules you will definitively not get the flat/apartment.

I don't know how it is in London, but I expect it to be brutal since it already is one of the (if not the single most) expensive city to live in in the world.

Maybe some londoners can share a light on this but I expect it's next to impossible to get a nice flat in London for a reasonable price.

I don't want an apartment on a big city. I like houses. That's why I live where I live.

And there's a big difference between housing cost and unlawful invasion of one's private life to influence the choice of a tenant.

I doubt many of the refugees that are being let into the country will have any of those social media accounts.
