[PCTuning]Radeon RX 480 on the way to the office! (And we signed no NDA) - Page 16

1) the high point of the 970 is 980 performance, that's the entry point for the 480. all 480's will offer that performance across the board(plus other improvements) while not all 970's by far could ever do that.

2) the 970 is choked for VRAM and suffers in several new games, most notably mirror's edge at 1080p. not to mention being behind the formerly equal(slightly slower actually)390 in almost everything today.

3) the 970 is straight up doomed to become irrelevant for benching by end of the year just like you don't see the 770, 670, etc but you see AMD's old mid ranged still trucking and relevant to current games. It's the strength of the architecture vs relying mostly on software optimization(thus lack of support when the company wants to sell the new product).

4) the 970 was a decent valued product for what it was but it's overrated to hell and back because most NVIDIA fans needed more than the 960 could offer but couldn't afford the faster titan or Ti and the 980 was a bad value(also expensive).

The RX480 is a great value and a great card even if it won't OC by 5%.

It is lol things get way over hyped.

iirc people were stating the AIB 1080's were gonna go to 2500mhz on air because we saw the founder's at 2100mhz 63C smile.gif

I dont even think casual people buying $200-250 cards bother with any overclocking, period

I think the overclocking scene has died in general a bit honestly.

PC enthusiasts are too busy deciding which vanity items or DLC they are going to waste their money on instead (jokes)

Had a conversation with my brother in law that works at best buy. He verified that they have rx480s incoming with the rest of their supplies in the Tuesday night supply truck. He didn't check exact numbers, but they're one of the bigger best buys down here, so he assumes at least 10+.

That doesn't sound like many.............

I suppose 10 to all the shops around the world adds up though.

I can't comment on US prices, it would be great if we had them here smile.gif

1080 goes for around 850-900EUR here, i think the 1070 is somewhere around 650-700EUR.

980ti goes around 650-700EUR, while the 970 goes for just under 290EUR. At launch, I expect the 4GB RX480 to be somewhere around the same price as the 970. I really have no other options other than those two, the 390X is around 400EUR and it's too much for me.

Just and the end I wanna say I hope RX480 performs as expected at launch. Hope it beats the 980 for the lower price. I'd get it no problems than. But there wasn't any need to keep like half of the GPU-crazy world in a situation like this when everyone wonders if 480 is a game changer. Why not just keep everything a secret and then kick everyone's ass at launch?

Again, I have to say, in Europe, the old hardware gets cheaper (bought new) while the new hardware gets way overpriced. I think in a few months we are going to see same prices for 980 and RX480. And taxes are real pain in the ass.

@FLCLimax,

Like I said, prices are different anywhere, prices AMD announced are probably US prices, here it's going to be a totally different story. Prices if 9xx and R9's are dropping quickly so soon we will see if the "european pricey RX480" is going be cheaper than a 980.

Can't keep up with all the posts about the things I said. Anyway, I'm way off topic for this thread and there is like 10 others. I respect everyones oppinion but everyone sees this differently. My last two cents, I don't like the way AMD releases stuff. Like leaks for Zen and performing as a 6950X. It's like keeping people on standby and just waiting for new stuff.

What's going to happen with RX490 or whatever it's going to be called? Offer 980ti performance and MSRP of 249$ for the 8GB version just when they release the 480, give out a few leads on it?

It'd be so much easier if both NVIDIA and AMD released cards at somewhere the same time, both goes for CPU's, and everyone knows when to buy and what to buy. This is theoreticly impossible but it would be the best deal for us. From where I come from, deep future is most likely overrated.

Trust me, I have a complete AMD system and am not a fanboy, mostly go bang-for-buck, but this pissed me off. It's not like they didn't have time for the RX's and Zen to make them. Put out 300 series almost the same as the 200 series. Seemed like nothing changes in AMD. Now, all they showed us is that they're using 16nm manufecturing process. But guys, lets face it, that's all they did so far. We have leaks everywhere and some show 390X and GTX980 performance and somewhere we see results under that.

The only thing that's gonna make this card really worth it if it overclocks well, either as "factory oc'd" or home overclocked. If we squeeze out somewhere near 980Ti on overclocks it's a great thing. But if the best it can do is 980 performance, it's not anything special. 970 can go that far with OC.

Please, don't get me wrong, we are on the same side here and it's just my opinion. We have a card that we have no idea how it will perform versus a card that's proven on the 1080p scene. Yes, the 3.5GB VRAM is a mess for it's performance level, but hey, it's not the end of the world if you pull your quality sliders down a bit.

Thing I'm afraid for RX480 are baby decieses, whether they'll support it well with software. You know, when I got my FX8320, it was really fine on paper. OC'd well in reality, got it stable to 4.8GHz, single core performance high and 8 of them to make a blast. But after all the benchmarking done, it hasn't proven itself in application and games. It goes behind those 4th series i5s and i7s. My R9 270X served me well for those couple of years, but can't say there wasn't trouble with it.

That's what I'm scared of. AMD proved itself more on paper and synthetic benchmarks than real life usage.

And again, guys, we are on the same side. We want more power for less money.

You have a few things wrong there. First of all AMD are using 14nm FiNFET LPP tech that is refined 14nm FinFET LPE and that is a bit smaller than 16nm FinFET that Nvidia are using. Then they are all 20nm with FinFETs ...
Not that it is important and helps with not knowing what is the exact performance of the card but we have had plenty of leaks that suggest the card is near GTX980 (and RX 470 being near GTX 970) at DX11 applications and even if they are slightly lower then they should be better in DX12 applications. All that makes this RX 470/480 cards well worth their money.
With the node change we get lower power consumption and lower cost for this lets say equivalent of GTX 970/980 performance. Those things alone make a big difference for people that are in the market of cards that perform great / good at 1080p / 1440p

I do feel that AMD should lift the NDA now so we can get all those reviews that people that got reference cards at Computex have ready for us and we can all line up on Wednesday the 29-th with between 100$-300$ ready to be spent as Lisa suggested. biggrin.gif
