LSI 9361-8i JBOD, Windows BusType and Azure Stack POC

Thread Starter
I'm setting up the azure private cloud POC on 2016 TP5 and it's been failing at step 17 (creating a failover cluster) and from the logs it appears as though none of my drives support S2D (storage spaces direct). Only drives with the BusType of SATA/SAS/NVME can be pooled into S2D disks, and mine are BusType RAID, even though the disks are configured as JBOD on the raid controller.

My understanding of the JBOD setting on LSI/Avago cards was that the disk was passed through and presented to the OS as a direct attached disk, but apparently Windows doesn't see it as this...

Does anyone have an understanding of how Windows concludes the PhysicalDisk BusType and any way I can get around the OS thinking my pass-thru disks are RAID VDs?

Far as I know, the MegaRAID 9361-8i controller doesn't support JBOD.

Yeah sorry, it's a Lenovo's 720ix controller - the closest "channel card" LSI equivalent is the 9361-8i as it uses the SAS3108 chip. I've actually flashed my 720ix with the 9361-8i firmware as the one lenovo provide is quite out of date. It definitely supports JBODding disks, though:

And all of those show up in windows as bustype RAID, which I can understand, but it kinda misses the point of JBOD mode...

I have the same card in a 2012 R2 Host machine, but I really don't understand your question. I do know that it supports JBOD however. I did also have to load the drivers to a flash drive and load them on the Host during the Windows install.

My question was that windows sees all the disks, regardless of whether they're virtual disks or JBOD, as bustype raid as below:

- and I wanted to know whether there was any way of forcing it to see the disks as SATA/SAS as opposed to raid in order to support S2D in server 2016.

After reading more and more I don't think it's going to be possible, though mad.gif

If I want a single disk on a RAID controller, I just configure it as RAID0 and only select that disk. Never given me any trouble before, and it's easier to change things up for future growth.

EDIT: Another thought is to flash it with an IT rom. Not sure if there is even one available for this card, but that may be a path you can try.

The 9361 is not going to present the disks directly to the OS, it presents them as VDs. As JBOD, it is simply going to present them as single disk VDs but still VDs.

This 9361-8i is not an HBA adapter it don't pass the drives to the OS it wants to manage them

As mentioned previously - unless you literally flash IT mode firmware onto the card it will still present those as RAID0 disks to the OS.

Any chance you can modify the powershell installer to let you use RAID disks? I know you can modify the memory requirements.
