get an AIB card or crank up the FE fans and enjoy your perma boost thumb.gif
Well with proper custom cooler that might work, but the reality is, with reference FE edition life is not so sunny as everybody is talking here.

Here are results how 1080 FE works on real gaming environment, meaning inside fractal R5 case. With now tweaks at all the clocks basically come down to base clock of 1600MHz after 20 minutes of gaming, so no boost at all. You have to tweak from afterburner the power and temp target to maximum to get clocks stay at ~1750-1800MHz for good.

On a serious note wading through the dirt being chucked around in here. What sort of firestrike score would be needed to say run games at 1440p max setting but with no AA?

I'm trying to decide what gpu to buy for a 1440p build that doesn't need AA on.

Thanks

Edit: Upon closer inspection the 480 numbers on the supposed leaked benchmark don't look right. The 480 OC score looks completely photoshopped if you zoom in on it. The sequence of numbers representing the score don't look aligned to other scores, I.e space between digits etc.

So I'd call the 480 Oc result almost certainly fake. Which is a shame

If the game is optimized . . . prolly around 22K graphics score.

Wait, no AA? You should use some at 1440 and still achieve the same. Some.

Point I'm trying to get at is do you think the 480 will likely prove good enough to run most games at 1440 at best settings. I.e I can't afford to put a 1070 in to go with the 1440 monitor and I'm hoping a 480 will do the job

If a 980 (supposed similar performance as the 480) can handle 1440, then it should. You gonna have to lower your setting for best. You want to max things out a bit, then the 1080.

I would get the 8GB, though. A game might not use all 8 but might go over 4, then the only true measure of running out of vram is - solid fps drops.

To be honest, Nvidia really needs a kick in the arse. I sincerely hope AMD pull it off, and if they do, I'll be going AMD for the first time in my PC gaming history. Nvidia's pricing almost puts me off of PC gaming these days.

you mean you have to move 2 sliders and click apply, yes it's so difficult and time consuming, takes whole 1 second. and this isn't a problem with custom cards at all.

Same thing happened when 290x released. People tend to have short memory.

The problem with 1070/80 is the shady pricing scheme. I called b/s when TPU used $599 to calculate perf/dollar of 1080 for example rolleyes.gif

Normally, I would agree with you on the DLC thing, but witcher 3 is an incredibly different beast. One of it's DLCs has more content then most full games do these days. It is more then worth the total cost of entry, especially considering there is a DRM free version.

FC primal is another minority game like Witcher 3, no multiplayer, most people won't bother upgrading their gpu to a top tier card just to play one or two games at max.

A 390X or GTX 980 can play almost every game at good frame rates at 1440p.
Im sorry, but since when was far cry, a major ubisoft title, a minority game? Actually, how is the witcher 3 a minority game? It has sold over 20 million copies, more then battlefield 4's 13.8 mil. Fallout 4 only sold 11.7 million. TW3 is just under call of duty, which BO3 sold 23 million. CDPR said 40% of sales were on the PC, which comes to 8 million. Most big AAA games only sell 1-2 million on PC at the most, so for PC benchmarking, TW3 is far from a minority title, it may very well be the biggest majority title.

Considering that EVGA has a $609 1080, and a $619 1080 with a custom cooler, and GALAX has a $599 1080, I'd say the $600 price is pretty accurate.
