They have a big overclocking headroom like the HD7970 (Not GHz or R9 280X), HD7950 (not boost), GTX980 Ti and Titan X.

It's funny how used 780's are more expensive than used 290's in Europe. Just shows how most ppl don't follow what is going on and buy brand name before performance.

7970s went upto 1.3Ghz as well, again not much of a difference. The way bigger difference was in price.

So far it seems a wash.

But It won't change the truth that 780Ti was not launched to compete with HD 7970. It was 290X remember ?
HD 7970 is doing great against 780Ti in DX12 except in Tomb Raider, it is a fact.

You can believe whatever you want, but the fact you are using a game with a broken API implementation to push what you are saying proves my point. the 7970 does better in some games, much worse in others. It is not consistently beating the 780ti. I mean, I could put up benchmarks of gameworks and nvidia leaning games, and show you a 780 thrashing a 290x, and it would mean just as much..

the fact is, we have long known that nvidia is no longer optimizing for the 780ti. The point also stand that AMD DID THE SAME THING years ago. They were no different when the 5000s came out, or when the 7000s came out, the 4000 and 6000 series both stopped being optimized for, respectively. Fact is, they were forced by their own re-brands to support GCN this long. For a GPU that isnt recieving any optimizations, and hasnt for over 2 years now, the 780ti seems to hold its own pretty well, especially in the benches that spyshagg posted below you.

Your graphs work against you. In the AMD leaning games, the 290x wins, and in the non AMD leaning games, the two are equal. Not bad considering the 780ti is no longer being optimized for anymore.

No it didn't, I'm talking about average clocks, not the clocks where 1 out of 100+ cards can achieve. thumb.gif

I can see AMD fans still rocking a 7950/7970 in 2020+, getting 3-5 fps in newest titles and praising AMD like the sun for supporting the relic

It's funny, you say that the 780Ti is no longer being optimized like if that's a good thing, something that justify the 780Ti obvious defeat to the 290X. The 780Ti is a card that costed much more money at every single point in time and is now left for dead, even more funny when you realize that the 290X was tied with the 780 before.

Too much worthless history you brought in here that has nothing to do with the context we had signed up to talk about, i.e. HD7950/7970 challenging 780Ti/Titan in DX12. And my lines are exactly the same as the latter in my previous comments.
Also you must finally acknowledge somewhere in this era of gaming that AMD is Uncle Sam of DirectX 12, (remember DX12 evolved from Mantle Vulkan technologies).
