How have they not targeted 970 market?

There's two 970 'markets'. The performance spec, and the market segment. They targeted the performance spec, but the market segment is wide open unless AMD pulls out a $300 card from somewhere.

edit: but yeah, point being, people who bought a 970 on launch would now look to buy a card for ~$330. Because that's what they're in the market for, spending a little upwards of $300 on a GPU.

any information about those cards other than than the picture of Lisa Su holding them up is pure guesswork. There hasn't even been any decent leaks about these two cards

Am I being trolled? I feel Im being trolled. The RX480 offers inbetween 390x/980 performance for 240ish dollars.GTX970s still cost 300ish dollars, and I highly doubt they are going to fall to under 200. Why on earth would anyone buy a 970? It costs more for less performance.

There are still plenty of GTX960 users. Plus AMD has stated their goal was to target users looking to spend around 200 on a video card. The most mainstream market. So users that previously had bought a 970 were already out of that category,

Which just proves my arguement more. They dont need to target the 970 price point because alot of those people arent going to budge anyways.

Previous AMD comments mention polaris will be leveraged both down and up the stack.

There is a more powerful polaris chip, but many people, myself included, would be disuaded from picking up the 480 if a 250-300$ card that matched the 1070 was being tuned up. (Pro-Tip: it is)

The problem with Polaris 10 chips have been known for some time. The full chip is having horrible yields, What can AMD do but cut the chip down to increase clockspeed? Yes, as fabrication techniques improve, the full P10 chip will become available. But at this moment, it's a far better bet to clock a cut-down P10 at 1266Mhz than release a full P10 incapable of hitting 1Ghz... So some will wait for the 480X or the 490, which will take time to fix.

In the meantime, enjoy an OC'd 200$ card that competes with the 1070, will definitely have worse perf/watt due to this though, and it will probably run hot. The non-OC, full P10 would have been able to fully compete against the 1070 for 300-350$. Unfortunately it was a disaster, so we get a great cut-down P10 for 200$ until some kinks are patched up.

well for now a 480X is purely hypothetical

You could avoid it, harvested chips are more expensive if you want the fully functional.

It's up to the apps to support the advanced and multi GPU rendering. Technically yes, practically no, practically even old SLI/CF is barely usable due to lack of support.
The thing is AMD is going to move to smaller dies to increase yields and work on combining chips and GPUs instead of making one huge overpriced chip/GPU.
I don't know why they aren't doing SFR yet in HW but maybe they will with Navi where they plan the scalability.

I'm not versed with the low level APIs details but I see no reason why multiGPU SFR shouldn't be doable if one wants to implement it.

I've already went over the current layout of AMD and Nvidia's strategies 2 pages back.

Obviously the 1070 can be OC'ed to near- 1080 levels as well. But almost every 480 should be able to clock to near-1400MHz.

Even a stock 1070 will beat an OCed 480x, but it's within spitting distance. (no more than 7% by average framerate)

And for 200$ cheaper. Anyone who is somewhat price-minded would choose an RX480 over the 1070 Founder's Edition.

When the FE 1070's are finally done, and prices can *actually* be found sub-400$, that will change. But it won't change for at least 2 months.
