[UploadVR] Serious Sam VR Dev: Oculus Offered a “Ton of Money” for Rift Exclusivity - Page 3

And I was hoping VR would basically save gaming (in my eyes)

Guess it's time to walk away.

And this is why we don't trust highly upvoted reddit posts that parrot a popular idea as a source. Reddit is an echochamber by design, though whether or not that was the goal is anyone's guess. Had you done some digging, you'd have found this:

Quote:
Ok, Mario, you've had fun here, now let's get serious. smile.gif

I want to clarify some of the inaccuracies about our relationship with Oculus. Oculus did approach us with an offer to help fund the completion of Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope in exchange for launching first on the Oculus Store and keeping it time-limited exclusive. Their offer was to help us accelerate development of our game, with the expectation that it would eventually support all PC VR platforms. We looked at the offer and decided it wasn’t right for our team. At no time did Oculus ask for, or did we discuss total exclusivity or buyout of support from Vive. We look forward to supporting Rift and Vive.

(Funny enough, reddit doesn't seem to care about the words you put in the thread title portion of the URL. Have a SFOCN version of the URL that links to a page with NSFOCN words: https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/4nxpnq/cornflake_facebook_and_cornflake_oculus/d490tdc)

In other words, like every other platform ever. You know, like timed exclusive games and/or DLC on the Xbox and/or PS4? It makes its way everywhere eventually but is "exclusive" for the first month. A very common practice in the industry to try and drive sales of a particular platform, and basically a non-story. Except Facebook did it, and they're evil.

Coming from you, just no.

They're trying to do exclusives on a peripheral, not a platform. A platform can run itself like PS4, Xbox One, etc., the Oculus Rift does not, it needs the PC to run on at all.

That's like saying Battlefield 1 can only be played on ASUS ROG monitors and nothing else, this is the first time that anyone knows of that a peripheral is even locking software to itself.

Fancy and complicated and new VR may be, the current PC-based incarnations still, again, require a beefy PC to even run any HMDs at all.

One more thing, the Vive games can run on the Oculus Rift through OpenVR, with the Rift for now using either Leap Motion, Razer Hydras, or Playstation Move controllers.

The idea here is to have a free ecosystem of HMDs and controllers united under a single VR, not one HMD only.

Oh, there's even more than that. Giant Cop was a Vive game that was almost finished to release, and was already played by famous Youtubers on the Vive. Then,
all of a sudden, Oculus paid them off for timed exclusivity and all of a sudden, no Vive release at all. AND this was after the fact that the Humble Bundle preorders were promised the Vive version.

Who knows how long until Touch releases, and how long before the artificial exclusivity ends?

These redditors are not stupid, they see BS when they see it, myself as well.

Don't bring logic into this discussion, we worship Spybook and their disgusting tactics.

Edit: reading the Reddit and Steam page on this the backlash is going to be on the Batman: Arkham Refund scale. Seems they've bought all the shovels to dig their own graves, I can't find a single shovel for sale here.

That's the political answer to the problem. Oh it's not a exclusive, just a timed exclusive. It still blocks the Vive owners from playing, until the Oculus can finally release their touch controller. Just because they are late to the game. Dirty tactics IMO. And the exclusivity was for 6 months, not one.

The VR frameworks and settings available in game should be such that you simply set it up for your VR parameters of the displays, lenses, sizes etc. and it renders correctly to it no matter if it's from bran A or B or product C or D or your home DIYed VR set E.
I hope people boo these proprietary solutions and backhand deals of exclusivity out of the market.

If anything there needs to be more competition on the VR development.

I'm certainly not buying games exclusive to Facebook/Oculus or AMD or Nvidia or who ever else that bribed them to ruin the PC gaming experience. And I'm sure as hell not gonna buy overpriced Facebook Rift if they are using the money to get exclusivity and block competition out of the market.
