Blind negativity and ignorance of facts can easily be confused for hatred. You choose to ignore the fact that they cannot possibly use polaris in their mobile gpus yet.

You don't know enough of the details surrounding their production to assume they are making questionable moves, this is why I called you an armchair expert. It's laughable.

It makes no sense to you, because you don't know the complexities of the situation, neither do I honestly. If they could have polaris everywhere right now they would, it's not a hard concept to grasp that it's just not possible. They are not holding back tech to make themselves suffer and to frustrate you as an enthusiast.

Again obviously there isn't enough chips to make enough for mobile parts in large volumes for OEMs. It sucks from a business standpoint but it is what it is.

You're assuming AMD are just stupid, instead of using logic to analyze why these things are happening.
So you are also an armchair expert, since you somehow know their yields are not good enough to push out more then a few products, despite you also saying that neither of us can grasp the complexity of the situation.

And IF Polaris is having yield issues, especially for the mobile variety that use smaller dies, that does not bode well for zen either, since both of them are on the same 14nm process. polaris 10 is supposedly 232mm2. So how small is polaris 11 then? 160m2 like the 360 series was? a 4 core intel skylake chip is 122mm2, so unless zen somehow packs an 8 core chip into the same size as the small skylake chip, zen will be a bit bigger then that. And if AMD cant manage polaris 11 sized dies, how are they going to manage zen sized dies either, on an even larger scale then polaris 11? Are we going to have yet again another round of shortages, which is what happened to kaveri?

For someone who claims I am negative and incorrect about the situation, you seem to agree with me there. If yields are not the problem, then why muck up the market with rebadges? if yields are a problem, how do we expect AMD to compete well with zen and polaris? Not saying nvidia isnt also having issues, they certainly are with pascal, but how much time will nvidia need to fix said problem?

Nvidia may dominate another year yes. That is just reality for AMD making a comeback. The real ground should be made in 2017/2018. If it's not made during that time they are in dire trouble.
See, this doesnt work. How is AMD supposed to compete in 2017/2018, if nvidia dominates again? You need money to make new products. and AMD is going to have to start paying on its debts in 2018. So starting to compete 2018 isnt an option, they need to compete before then.

On desktop AMD seems OK, but the mobile options are not competitive except for the high end polaris models. Considering AMD is targeting mid range with the 480, it seems silly to leave the mid range mobile market to nvidia, and only do high end, no?

I don't see what all the fuss is about with this card. It is in exactly the price/performance ratio I would expect new 14nm cards to be. I would expect the new 1060 in the same ballpark. It feels like people have jumped on the marketing hype, again.

Which is expected, since the 480 and the 1070 are not meant to compete with each other.

the only question is, how well does the 480 overclock, and how well does that overclock scale? If it scales hawaii level, then OCed 480 will be incredibly fun to play with.

AMD didn't do no nuffin'.

It was Nvidia releasing the mid-range GTX 1080 at 700$ what paved the way to make a card at this performance level for 199$ look good.

Also I'm pretty sure Nvidia didn't have the intention of releasing the GTX 1060 at 200$, but rather 250$+. Maybe they have to now.

40% faster for only 125% more money thumb.gif

You could Crossfire RX 480 and buy a 50$ game instead of the price of a single 1070 biggrin.gif

Well the previous leaks over the couple of days have made it seem like RX 480 was close to GTX 1070.
It doesnt look like that at all.

Even though if RX 480 and GTX 1070 isnt meant to compete with each other, it still sucks that AMD doesnt have a Polaris chip for high end gaming
post #228 of 375
Amd said there will be nothing for high end. no matter what they do , you people always make it bad.

Bingo! I doubt much of that 40% worth of extra performance is noticeable at 1080p/60hz.

While the 480 isn't all that appealing to me, gaming at 1440p and wanting to switch to 1440p ultra wide, it should be very appealing to it's target audience.

It IS bad that have no Polaris chip for midrange (GP104). Not just for customers that want multiple options but also for AMD
