About to repair a Toshiba, but...

Hello everyone,

The laptop: Toshiba Satellite C855 - 27V

Long story short. My laptop has a malfunctioning GPU, and given the fact it is placed on the motherboard, I need to replace the motherboard. I have found lots of replacement parts on ebay, but some of them are in an "almost - new condition, from a working laptop, tested 140% blabla..." and others "have been carefully tested by a A+ certified technicians and is guaranteed to work 100% blabla". All of them give some sort of warranty (2 - 3months) and are top-rated sellers.

My question is, should I trust them and go ahead and buy my replacement part? Anyone with previous experience with this matter?

Thanks in advance thumb.gif

If the motherboard is sold to be in working condition, and it isn't, eBay will refund your purchase price + shipping.

Also, the seller will bend over backwards to make you happy - and avoid bad feedback.

I've twice had issues with sellers, and without me even opening a dispute, eBay returned my money.

How do you have an issue without opening a dispute? Ebay only knows about it after you open a dispute or is there some other form of complaint, reporting system that says you have an issue with the seller? It was probably the seller that sent you the money back before you open a dispute which could impact their rating in some way.

In general laptop GPUs overheat and detach from the board or it's own board, they used to bake them back etc. but it only worked for like a month or year. If the laptop has a powerful GPU or GPU that likes to heat a lot then there is no way you will fix it permanently without excessive cooling. It's a design mistake many laptops suffer from, at least those with dedicated GPUs that are soldered onto the board.

It could also affect CPUs/iGPUs if they are soldered onto the board instead of being in a socket.

Since it's a older crappy laptop, it's really better to put the money toward a new laptop or PC instead of repairing the old one with refurbished parts.

Next time try to choose a laptop that doesn't overheat and has the chips in sockets instead of soldered onto the board, especially soldered on GPUs are often dying. The laptops work sure during warranty but after that it starts to kick in and die and people have to replace them which keeps the business going.
I have an older laptop from 2006 and it still works but other member of family already has 2nd laptop dead, both of which are newer than mine, I think they baked the first to fix the GPU but it died afterwards anyway a few months later.
You gotta be careful when picking a laptop these days, most of them are flimsy, cheap and badly designed.

eBay reads all the communications between sellers and buyers after a sale. If the issue is obviously an issue with the seller eBay just cut's it short and returns the buyer's money - no questions asked.

Here are the two issues I've had:
Seller shipped the item. Tracking indicated item was a the regional post office in my area (not local) for 1 week. I contacted my local post office and they confirmed it was likely "lost" at the regional post office. Sent eBay message to seller stating what was going on and asking for a refund. Seller responded that I would have to wait until he filed an insurance claim with the post office. After that, and after he got hos money (6-8 weeks) he would either reship or refund. Before I could respond that this was his issue, not mine (a few hours), I got an email from PayPal that the purchase price had been credited to my PP account. I Never had to file a dispute.

Seller ships Item from China. Two weeks after stated delivery date I had not received item. Tracking ended when it left seller.. Contacted seller, explained issue and asked for refund. 2 hours later, again, PP message that purchase price was credited to my account. Then, a month later Item arrived. Contacted eBay and they said they had no issue and I could contact the seller - if I wanted to. I Never had to file a dispute.

The laptop has a low end amd hd7610m soldered on the mainboard. The gpu core has NO active NOR passive cooling on it by default... Poor design and poor choice by me I guess.

As you mentioned, there has been a long period of time for it running hot. So, I also tend to believe the excessive heat has caused the damage.

Nevertheless, I' d like to repair it just for the whole experience. Apart from ebay, what are your thoughts on alibaba?

Alibaba is B2B (larghe quantities directly from the manufacturers)

It's AliExpress.
Great prices - some unbelievably lower than the exact same item on e bay. Great guarantee. Unfortunately delivery times can be a month or more., but usually like 2 -3 weeks.
If you don't get the part by the delivery date you get your money back
If you get the wrong item you get your money back and keep the item.
