Intel NUC with eGPU issues. Help!

Thread Starter
So I've been getting all of my parts together for a special build (that I plan to post on here in a few weeks once I get this issue straightened out and assembled), but I have run into a bit of a snag. I can't get the system to POST with the eGPU, or even get the M.2 slot in the NUC to show that anything is connected to it. This is my first attempt at an eGPU and my first time playing around with a NUC.

Here are specs I'm working with:
EVGA GTX 950 SC (I've removed the shroud for space constraints)
Intel NUC5i5RYK
16GB Mushkin Essentials DDR3L RAM

I have the 950 connected to an X4 to X16 PCI riser, and then that riser is connected to an M.2 to X4 adapter with the 4-pin molex plugged in.

At this point I'm just trying to get the system to POST with the 950 plugged in. For now I'm powering the M.2 to PCI adapter and have the GTX 950's 6-pin powered through a jumped 750W PSU. The 950's fan spins when the PSU is powered, and after you hit the power button on the NUC. This makes me think that the NUC and 950 are somehow communicating, but not the way they should be. I have a screenshot posted below using the on board video. Do you think I need to get Windows installed and drivers for the GPU installed? I figured since a regular PC will show video without GPU drivers that it would be no different on the NUC, but like I said earlier, I have never played with one of these NUCS.

I also read through this thread: https://hardforum.com/threads/i5-nuc-and-gtx980.1865546/
but didn't see him running into any issues like this. Maybe a bad adapter???

This project is gonna be awesome, and anyone who helps out will get credit for the final build thumb.gif

You can see the fan is spinning, I also tried a GT 210 and had the same issue.

You can see how I have everything connected.

Through the on board video, you can see that the BIOS do not report anything in the M.2 slot.

An overview of the whole setup.

This is just a guess but maybe the gpu isnt getting enough power? confused.gif Ive just started checking these NUC builds out and there dope. I love the idea keep it up! thumb.gif

EDIT: I just realized that its connected to an external power supply doh.gifdoh.gifdoh.gif

It almost seems like there's not enough PCI-E lanes available to run both the m.2 drive and the GPU. I know that shouldn't be the case, I'm just saying that that is what it looks like.

Well I'm only running the GPU right now. I'm going to use a mechanical WD black for storage. From what I've found is that the M.2 slot is basically a X4 PCI 2.0 lane, so there should be just enough to run a lower end card like a 950...

I can't find the thread right now (perhaps someone else can help me), but someone else ran this setup successfully lately and actually found the limiting part to be not the x4 3.0/2.0 PCIe bus, but instead the M.2 to PCI adapter which essentially reduced GPU performance by 50% rendering the build rather useless. Just a heads-up before you get to financially committed to this project.

Here is a link to one successful build log for this config (not the one mentioned previously)

I was a bit worried about the lanes bottlenecking my 950, but I think it was that thread that I looked at before I bought everything. It looks like he basically gets about 80% of his 980. I just need to be able to play games at a decent fps at 1080p, so I think my 950 will do alright. Since those adapters are so cheap, I'm just going to order a new pair, and possibly a cheap M.2 SSD just to test the M.2 slot.

The PCIe extension cable is killing it. Using similar adapters, I have found that some GPUs will not work with an extension. Try getting the card into the M2 adapter directly.

The M2 adapter cant kill performance by 50%. Its just the lack of PCIe lanes and slow CPU.

Some M2 slots are SATA only as well. Make sure yours supports NVME.

Try booting into Windows. The BIOS may not init any 3rd party GPU and the M2 slot may only report SSD's in the BIOS. If you boot Windows it should find the device on the PCIe bus and install a driver.

A laptop ExpressCard eGPU setup works the same way. BIOS will not init the GPU at all, and may even CRASH at boot if the GPU is plugged in. For it to work you boot Windows, put the computer to sleep, plug in GPU, resume from sleep and Windows finds the GPU and uses it.

You might be right about the BIOS only reporting SSD's. I have a Windows 10 flash drive around here somewhere, I'm going to install that and see if it does anything. That being said, what makes you think the riser cable is killing it? Also, the M.2 slot does indeed support NVMe.

The extra length can push the signals out of spec if its just a flat ribbon. I have a 4x riser I use to route out the back of a 1u server so I can attach a GPU. Some cards don't like it, and refuse to work on it. From what I remember, it was PCIe 3.0 cards that had the most problems. PCIe 1.1 cards had zero issues.

Get windows installed then see if it shows up in device manager.

I got Windows installed, but still nothing showing up under device manager. I did a little research on the M.2 adapter that I bought, and it turns out it only has the tracing for X2, not X4. It might be a bandwidth issue at this point. I think I need to find a different adapter, but the one that was used on that Hardforums thread is out of stock... I'm afraid that I'm dead in the water at this point. The part number that was used in that build was "P4SM2" by Bplus.
