I'm not so sure about that.

I don't think it would be impossible to adapt a more modular design with a strong CPU base. IPC doesn't really matter for consoles either, so it wouldn't be so difficult to do it affordably.

Look at what's coming up. Zen, HSA, and true multi-GPU support with the new API's. I think it would be pretty reasonable to launch a 14nm platform right now and keep it relevant with low-level coding for 4 years. After 4 years, dumping in 2 more of the exact same GPU could be reasonably cheap and on a console this would represent a huge performance gain.

This type of staggered release would help overcome the obvious problems with high entry price. The cost of going overboard on RAM and CPU in the initial release wouldn't be so bad, especially when AMD gets into the mix with Zen. PSU upgrade could be sold with the expansion GPU's. RAM could also be upgraded in a modular fashion, if necessary.

I could see consoles really competing in this market. People have a real thirst for the PC experience; I think they could be easily sold on the idea.

And from a developer standpoint, you're still going to be working with a familiar platform after the upgrade. Same GPU's, same API, same CPU, same amount of RAM. HSA could lend heavily to the flexibility of that kind of platform, too.

Are they skipping native 1080P (Most games are 700/900 or whatever) and going straight into 4k? Where again, i doubt 60fps will be standard across the board. I find it hard to believe they will be able to push 4k at 60fps without really dumbing down the graphics.wth.gif

The DigitalFoundry channel on YouTube, said they have seen the Technical Design Documents of the PS4 Neo, and that Sony hammers on using Upscaling to get 4K.

So back to up-scaling they go.... To me that doesn't sound so "native".

True that. 4k is no easy feat to pull off. XB1 couldn't even do 1080p properly.

"6 Teraflops." Everywhere I turn that's what they are pushing.

SONY never said games would be in native 4K. go back to the Neo thread, i read between the lines and state what they mean plainly for people. the new PS4 is just for pushing VR and UHD Blu Ray. They had no intentions of actual gaming at 4K and their language tells you that. "sharper graphics", 4K "content" and the only specific for games was that 1080p is the enforced standard.

All of you do realize the PS2 and PS3 both natively supported plug and play Mouse and KB right? It was up to the developer to integrate it into their game or not. IE BF3 on PS3 did support KB/M but was pulled out after the 1st or 2nd patch.

You guys are so out of touch with reality. There's about 6 mainstream PS4 games that are sub-1080p; they're 900p and there are zero 720p games rolleyes.gif

Anyway, unfortunately, the more consoles become like PCs, the more likely they software quality will degrade. Fixed hardware makes all the difference, hence games like UC4 destroying 99.9999999% of PC games.

Most PS4 games are 1080p. Same will be true for Neo.
