[Gamespot] Project Scorpio Is 4.5X as Powerful as Xbox One, Phil Spencer Says - Page 8

Only time I would buy a console is if the NX ends up being more powerful than the PS4. The Nintendo IPS plus the ability to play AAA third party titles which weren't ported due to Wii U due to it being underpowered would get me. I haven't purchased a console since the Wii.

Wow.

He's not wrong. Saying "consoles will bury PC" is the silliest thing i've ever heard, and we've been hearing that since PC's exist. Guess what, it's never true.

Plus, if you want to "quit PC gaming" and get a console, just do it. No need to whine on OCN.

The truth is, if Scorpio were a reality now, i'd probably concede (not really, but almost). However, it's scheduled to release in 1.5 years. Who knows how much further behind it'll be then.

Truth be told, if there ever was a time to go PC it would be now. The route MS is going with the Scorpio or Xbox in general of having it games be fully backwards compatible with the Xbox One and available on PC's with Windows 10 means devs are going to need to plan new titles from the beginning to run on multiple configurations rather than on only one or two configurations (PS and Xbox), then just throwing a quick port at the PC.

Scorpio having an 8 core (I guess quad core with hyperthreading) means there is incentive for devs to abandon the single threaded applications and embrace multi-threaded processes, further providing a boon to PC gaming.

Finally, if as a lot of us are theorizing, Scorpio is using a Zen APU crossfired with a Polaris GPU, then that means that multi-gpu set-ups should be the norm, rather than the exception.

I take nothing away from what little was unveiled about project scorpio as having any negative effects on PC gaming, and a bunch of positives. thumb.gif

Exactly. Like i was saying to a friend yesterday, "How are you not happy with the new (actually current gen) consoles? Sure, you're stuck developing for 2013, but it beats developing for 2009".

PC gaming, for the most part, will benefit more the better consoles are.

Is the Scorpio next gen or is it just an upgrade? I'm a bit confused. It looks they they are about to pull a full 32x/Sega CD on us.

consoles are going the PC route.

Stronger hardware every 3-4 years but no new generation of games. continous upgrades of games.

Atleast it sounds like that.

I think the PS5 would also run PS4NEO games.

Aren't new consoles supposed to run games of previous generation? This upgrade may not happen in the next generation.

On the subject of PlayStation 4 Neo, House said that the new machine will very much be something that stands aside the original hardware – it’s not a replacement, and both machines will be supported throughout the PS4 lifecycle. “I don’t think we’re suggesting with Neo, the conventional console lifecycle is over – I’m certainly not making that statement,” he said. “This is an additional option, it’s a high-end version of a PlayStation 4, let’s be very clear about that, rather than a generational shift.”

My current rig will be my last.

I don't think you are that far off base on the rinse and repeat cycle. In fact, in my opinion, you are right on the money. This rinse and repeat will likely push more people to console gaming over time. Gaming is just a form of entertainment, and one can certainly enjoy gaming without the nuisance of PC a setup cobbled together with disparate hardware components each vying to carve out its own little proprietary niche....lol

And, and this is one of the reasons why console gaming is the larger of the two platforms for this sort of entertainment. More powerful consoles should provide a greater incentive and an enjoyable enough experience for more people to migrate from PC gaming to console gaming. In addition, busy people often do prefer console gaming over PC gaming, as it does not require the brain damage needed to sort through various manufacturers' (starting with OS, GPU, mobo, CPU, etc. etc) respective proprietary eco systems just to be able to play a darn game... lol

Upgrade. A pretty decent one given it's jump over the XB1's pathetic hardware but it's going to be using all of the same firmware and will have full backwards compatibility. Same servers, same community networking, etc...

Given that they've been showing it off as a premium product, complete with a carbon fiber controller, this will undoubtedly mean an upgraded price too. Even beyond that of the XB1+Kinect's launch price is quite likely.

Which begs the question: Buy a $7-800 Xbox, or buy a $7-800 GPU and throw it in damn near any old PC you have laying around and get a better gaming experience?
