Gigabyte GTX 1080 and 1070 G1 Gaming buzzing noise fix

Hey all,

I saw some reports on reddit that the G1 cards have a buzzing noise. Mine did indeed have that noise as well but it's really easy to permanently fix. I started looking around at it and found that the buzzing noise was coming from the last fan on the cooler. It was pulsing on and off and every time it did so it buzzed. If I set the fan speed up a tiny bit it went away. Seemed like there was an issue with the voltage going to the fan not being quite enough to keep it spinning. I opened the Gigabyte Xtreme Engine app and set the fan speed to 100% and let the fans run for about 15 min. So far buzzing noise is gone and it has been quite a while. Guessing the fan bearings /bushings whatever they use just needed to wear in a little bit. What got me on to this was that I have a bunch of high CFM delta fans in my PC and I have a fan RPM controller app from Asus.... If I set the PWM RPM a tad too low the fans will pulse on and off. The fans I have can be serviced so after I put a drop of oil on all of them (Bought them all used) they all were able to be dropped about 40 RPM for the minimum PWM speed setting without pulsing. I guessed that this was the issue with the G1 and it seems to be correct.

Let me know what you guys experience.

God dammit I just ordered this pile of junk. I had this annoying fan rattle that lasted for 2 years on my old 780Ti from Gigabyte. Since none of the 1080 aftermarket gpu's, apart from Gigabyte, are yet avaliable in my country I was forced to pick one. I swear to god if this piece of s*** has that fan rattle I will....

EDIT: Now that I've cleared my thoughts I immediately canceled my order and have decided to wait for ASUS strix. I don't care if I have to wait for two months.

I'm sure the Asus card is better but I couldn't wait. I can live with the noise but so far it is gone. After I posted this I actually found there is a bios update already for the GTX 1080 G1 to specifically fix this issue. No such update for the 1070 yet though. I am pretty happy with my card though. Good temps and pretty quiet when gaming. I actually think the nose is caused by Gigabytes 3Dfan technology. If you look at their website for the G1 Gaming cards it shows the fan pulsing on and off. Problem is that the fans can have a tendency to rattle on startup. So far with my card though it seems like once I ran it on high for a while and wore in the bearings everything was fine.

How did you update the BIOS on the G1 1080 card?

It's on the Gigabyte website. Go to their downloads page for the 1080 G1

Pretty sure I've seen way more complaints about the Strix at this point over the G1. Just google it.

Almost all GPU vendors assemble those cheap "FirstDo" fans: http://en.firstdo.cn/products_list.html
Even if quality has slightly improved over the years they are still prone to PWM noise or other noise interference.

Already replaced the fans on my card due to PWM noise:
