[IGN] E3 2016: Nintendo Boss on NX: 'For Us, It's Not About Specs' - Page 18

Specs don't matter to Nintendo, but they could have mattered. And they mattered, before.

Back in the N64 days, they were in a wholly unique place in the market, specs-wise. The only 64-bit system (a metric we don't even bother using, now), with competitors who couldn't even come close to what Nintendo was capable of.

Remember Super Mario 64? What enabled that? Oh, that's right: a gaming system with technical capabilities beyond anything that had ever been attempted. And what was the result? A game that literally changed the direction of gaming as a whole, moving from the limited concept of the 2D sidescroller, with maybe an isometric view, into something where you could explore a world.

Nintendo led the way, once. And they did it on the back of superior hardware. And those who followed were the 3rd-party developers, who made some of the best games on N64. Yes, Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Star Fox 64, these were fantastic games that Nintendo put out. But where would we be today without the likes of Rare, just to name one? Rare, more than any of the others, really pushed what the system was capable of, time and time again. They wrung out every drop of performance that they could, and even overbudgeted sometimes (Banjo-Tooie, why do you give me 15 FPS?).

And then came Gamecube. The first system in the "Specs don't matter" mindset. And yes, some of the games they made are still on my top-play list. Metroid Prime, to name my favorite on the system. Second-party, I guess, but still, the Metroid name is the weight that only Nintendo can provide.

But the other developers? They bailed. Hard. They were trying to push the limits, and Nintendo didn't give them the tools. And they've never come back. Yes, Wii was successful, because, again, Nintendo provided a hardware capability that expanded how we play games, what we expect a game to look like. It wasn't through raw computational horsepower this time, but rather a unique interface that had never been successfully implemented before. The Wii's specs probably didn't matter, in that they were "good enough." Because the strength of the Wii interface in revolutionizing the gaming experience was that impressive, that fundamentally different, that that is why people bought the console.

And then came Wii U. A console that came too short on the heels of the Wii, and didn't offer anything revolutionary or even particularly interesting. People had tablets already, they were used to using "second screens" while doing things as mundane as watching TV. They were also slow in rolling out the first-party exclusives that are the reason people buy Nintendo systems. Sure, Smash and Kart eventually came, but for me at least it was too little, too late. There still isn't Zelda, and it seems there won't be. Metroid has disappeared with the curtain call of Retro on the Prime series. They just aren't meeting even their own standards for software on the system, and disappointing sales are the result.

So, what does this mean for NX? It is simple: in order for specs to not matter, you have to have something other than specs that does. Gamecube did not, and it was a sales disappointment. Wii did, and it was a massive success. Wii U did not, and it was a sales disappointment.

What will NX bring to the table, if not specs?

I don't really care about third party developers in regards to Nintendo tbh. Nintendo themselves make the most iconic video game franchises and as long as that remains the case they will continue to do well enough. All this doom and gloom over Nintendo when the Wii set sales records for consoles less than a decade ago. kookoo.gif

Now, do I wish they would release something on par with the other consoles in terms of graphical performance? Sure, of course. But I don't want Nintendo to try to be MS or Sony either. They just need to remain Nintendo and all the other stuff will work itself out. Look at what Dreamcast did to Sega...

An even better example is the PS3. Not only was it PowerPC, but it also implemented the Cell engine with one main core and 8 (6 available) coprocessor cores that were much closer to a GPU in architecture. Or the PS2, with its fairly arcane Emotion Engine. Seriously, in this day of easy cross-compilation, frameworks/APIs, etc., the CPU ISA has pretty much nothing to do with the lack of support; it's things like Nintendo's rather poor relations with developers and the system's limitations that are the big problems.

essentially how Sega ceased to be Sega after leaving the hardware market post dreamcast. They for hte most part given up a lot of things, and just went to throwing their money at their moneymaker known as Phantasy Star Online 2

Agree with Eric.

Plus it will never happen since it will be Nintendo who will be doing the buying biggrin.gif

Buried in reams of financial data is the revelation that Nintendo have 812.8 billion Yen (£6.7/$10.5 billion) in the bank – enough for it to take a 20 billion Yen loss (£163/$257 million) every year until 2052. Then there’s almost 469 billion Yen (£3.8/$6.0 billion) held in premises, equipment and investments. When that runs out – we’re in the year 2075 by this point – they’ve got some of the most valuable intellectual property in gaming to sell off before the company goes out of business.

I think Nintendo is better off just making games and dropping from console market.
