Or because dvi is useless if you have a dp monitor and youd rather have a single slot card then a dual slot card pretty much taken up by the DVI port?

The waterblock for the r9 fury/nano/x all come with a new bracket making it a single slot. Its not too much money its about functionality lol.

If i had the money for either of those cards and waterblocks for them i would never tear into them like that personally. Too much money for me to go slicing into it like a bad horror flick haha. It would be nice if the ports were dis-connectable from the board, then i wouldnt mind but cutting, nah. not for me personally haha

Idk how the dual dvi ports work but the pcb is soldered on the back i dont see why it shouldnt be possible to desolder it, wish i could try it if i had a solder lol.

Technically that could work, i do wonder if it would screw up the card, probably not but if you screw anything up im kinda thinking the warranty doesnt cover it haha. I have a soldering gun but i dont have a gpu to test it with. I'd rather not bludgeon my 960's haha.

It's part of the pci-e spec to allow inserting different width cards into different width slots. You can plug a pci-e 16x card into an (open-ended) pci-e 1x slot, or a pci-e 1x card into a pci-e 16x slot, and everything in between. If it fits, it works. Thats how PCI-E works. If you've ever seen an open-ended pci-e slot, thats why.

I have my x1 sound card in an x4 slot without issues.

Stick the card is the lowest x16 slot. Depending on your cpu, you will either have x16 top x16 middle and x8(40 pci-e lane cpu) for that slot(more than needed) or X16 X8 and X4(still enough.28 lane cpus)

Your lowest PCI-E slot only works if you are not using the M.2 PCI Express module.

Please see the manual for your board here. Check page 17-18. I know it says video card, but sound cards should work since PCI-e should be PCI-e

Sweet! Been busy and just got back to check on it and...
Oohh cool! I was really wondering if that was possible. Was scared to try it, afraid it would blow the whole works. Never seen open end slots like that.
But then this is my first MB so what am I talking about lol!
now I'll try my sound card since I've got it anyway.

Short list my build spec's
Asrock x99 extreme4
Core intel i7 5960x
2 GeForce 980ti 6GB in sli
Corsair platinum Ram 32GB. Yea I know.. Overkill over rated ram.
What I'm reading on manual it says x16 slot on very last one but I've looked at it and only see gold contacts going to halfway point. rest is just plastic. But plenty enough for my sound card and it won't affect any other slots. only if I use my M.2 slot then it will shut pcie 5 x16 completely off like you said. Can't use M.2 with 980ti's in sli anyway I've got full cover waterblocks which block that slot.

If you like throwing away hundreds of dollars in the name of 'looks' and cut up electronics physically, be my guest. You won't be able to warranty it afterwards or sell it to another person though (except for maybe a tiny fraction of what you originally bought it for)

Let us know how it works out.

I would be over 90% sure(leaving 10% for some strange design issue with the board) it should be able to run in that slot.

Sure! I'll let you all know. it may be a little while still, 2 wks give or more. Being slow, doing some modding on my case and a computer repair guy is coming over to help with wiring.
