Good high quality switch?

Thread Starter
I often need to switch between my computer speakers, and my headphones. There is always someone trying to sleep or whatever around here. So I need to be able to switch from speakers to headphones on the fly. I don't really like having to get up, and walk around to the back of my PC, and swap the cables manually, at the sound card. That gets old pretty fast. I had a junky $16 switch but it allows for all kinds of lousy audio problems.

So can someone please recommend me a good quality audio switch? I'm just going to be plugging in two 3mm audio prongs into it. The standard size that we're all familiar with. I want to be able to just hit a button or a switch, and have it switch over.

I lot of motherboards have multiple places to plug in outputs and you can switch between them right in the little windows panel for sound. Did you check if your board will let you do that?

Hmm I wasn't aware of that. Never really looked into it. I was under the impression that you just had your onboard sound outputs, and if you wanted anything else you bought a video card. I don't see anything on the I/O of the board that would suggest that there is another jack somewhere. Other than the onboard sound itself. Its a Gigabyte Z77.

I don't think I've ever really seen what you're referring to... are these just additional jacks on the back that somehow lead to the sound card? Or are they headers on the motherboard, which you can plug a jack panel into, that will route it to the sound card?

Normally there is at least one output on the back, and then you have the header for front panel jacks. Some motherboards don't let you control them separate though. Not all my cases have front panel jacks either so it's not applicable in every case but can work.

most motherboards have like 5 different jacks on them for running 7.1 surround on separate channels. I think you can use the outputs for multiple speakers that way with no front panel connections.

another thing I thought of would just be to use a splitter, and leave the headphones on all the time and switch the speakers off when you're using the headphones.

I never really looked it up, but I was always under the impression that all those jacks just led to the onboard audio. So no matter where you plugged anything in, if it wasn't plugged into the soundcard itself, you were going to be running onboard audio. Is that correct?

Normally you can plug the front panel jacks into your soundcard. The soundcard should have more than one output already most likely

Unfortunately it only has one... Ithink. The green 3mm jack.

So most people don't just use some form of switch?

something like this, but "high quality" is another question.
On the other hand it's a very simple technique, which shouldn't leave much opportunities to mess up.
