Need advice on new PSU to replace my Seasonic X-650

Thread Starter
I have been running the following setup for at least 3 years but have owned my Seasonic X-650 since 2010:

  • I7-3770k overclocked between 4.2-4.5 ghz with voltage of about 1.25 on the vcore.
  • 2x 7970s lightly overclocked to 1010/1500 mhz (no voltage above stock levels).
  • 2x Samsung 830 256GB SSDs
  • 1x Samsung 1TB 7200RPM hard drive
  • 1x Western Digital 2TB 5400RPM Green drive
  • 4x2GB G.Skill DDR3-1600 @ 1.6v

Recently I have been having issues with the blue screen of death during gaming sessions, AMD display driver hangs and resets at the desktop and the eventual BSOD, and the PC not wanting to shut off or restart (Windows and screen will shut down but fans, DVD, GPUs and CPU fans remain running). These issues do not occur when no graphics driver is installed and I have tried several from 15.1 to 16.6.1 Crimson. It must be a weakness in the link from the PSU to the GPUs themselves that has developed as I have been pushing its limits for a while (I also reinstalled Windows a few times and no luck with that either). The above setup is rated at 600W under regular loads with peak watts around 650-660W.

I'm looking to buy a new PSU to replace it but I want to buy the right size for my application. My plan is to upgrade from the 7970s to the new RX-480 (assuming all the rumors are true about it) once they launch next month and potentially add another 480 down the line to run in crossfire. The new 480s are less power hungry so I'm thinking that a Seasonic X-750 should do the trick but perhaps the experts on here would recommend playing it safe and paying the extra £15-20 for the Seasonic X-850?
