Should I buy a gtx 980 if I have a 980M?

So I have an Alienware laptop with a 980M inside of it and it plays games pretty well, but I do have the Alienware Amp so I could get a GTX 980 desktop card, I've been looking around and I know the 980M is somewhere between the desktop 960 and 970, I was wondering though if it would be worth it or not.

Only you knows smile.gif If u need/want more fps u will get it with that but if its worth it is another question biggrin.gif

If it's worth the money for u then go for it. U could also go for a cheap second hand 980 Ti or a 1070.

Any reason to not wait a couple of weeks and get a 1070 when the prices settle down? Should be similar pricing and nearly double the performance.

*edit* meh jezzer beat me to it while I was looking at prices biggrin.gif

Considering a 1070 goes for 30-50 more ATM once stocks resupply I would think that would be a better buy.

Well I kinda set my eyes on the 980, I mean then I could say My laptop runs a 980 and 980M tongue.gif but I just cant decide if the performance boost would be worth it.

Well from what I see it is about a 30-40% boost in FPS in games. If that is worth it to you for the price then go for it. It will be a noticeable fps increase. thumb.gif

That's a pretty nice performance gain, and the 980 is $450 right now so that's not to bad. Just have to decide if 30%-40% boost is worth $450.

980 should be cut in price pretty soon if not already. Id say to wait and grab a 1070 or one of the hopped up RX 480's when they drop.

Yeah.... don't be buying a previous gen GPU right now man. You'll be wasting your money considering you can get a card that performs even better a la 1070 (talking like 980 ti levels) for about or less than the price of a 980.

Just be patient!

I think there's a gain, a decent one at that!

Significantly better floating-point performance - 4,358 GFLOPS vs 3,189 GFLOPS
Higher effective memory clock speed - 7,012 MHz vs 5,012 MHz
Higher pixel rate - 78 GPixel/s vs 66.4 GPixel/s
More shading units - 2,048 vs 1,536
More texture mapping units - 128 vs 96
Higher memory clock speed - 1,753 MHz vs 1,253 MHz

Games / Benches:
Significantly better PassMark score - 9,755 vs 5,671
Better 3DMark06 score - 17,292 vs - 12,562
Better 3DMark vantage graphics score - 45,345.5 vs 34,695
Better 3DMark 11 graphics score 32,943 vs 26,811
Higher bioshock infinite framerate - 107 fps vs 89.9 fps
Higher crysis 3 framerate - 60.55 fps vs 43.25 fps
Higher FarCry 3 framerate - 66.4 fps vs 51.55 fps

I think that's a decent jump in performance! Though if he can wait, I'd wait for the 1070, lower power and heat as well as most probably paying for the same price!

I'd also try to look for a second hand 980 Ti as recommended earlier (if OP can't wait), now that would be an even bigger jump!
