Connect 2 PCs on same ethernet cable

Thread Starter
I have an ethernet cable going into the basement and I want to put my desktop, laptop, and PS4 on the same ethernet cable. The cable connects to my wireless router in the living room. Is there a way to split that connection 3 ways? If not, what about 2 ways? I imagine I'm going to need to buy a wired router but I don't know about connecting a router into another router. I would like everything in the basement to be wired because we don't get a strong Wifi signal there and I would like to avoid running another cable from the upstairs router to the basement. If possible, I would like to just use the 1 cable from the router to the other router and then split that 3 ways.

You need an Ethernet switch like this one https://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-Gigabit-Ethernet-Desktop-TL-SG108/dp/B00A121WN6/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1466298100&sr=1-2-spons&keywords=ethernet+switch&psc=1

What the other guy said. A simple switch will do. But no need for 8 port for what you need. Most Best Buys will have the 5 port and you can just pull up Amazon and they will match the price assuming you don't want to wait two days for shipping.

I have a really great idea for you. It will work fine with a gigabit switch like sctheluna mentioned earlier. Spend a little more and buy a router to turn into an access point. There are multiple step by step instructions on setting them up depending on the manufacturer. Connect the Ethernet cable going to the basement to the router/access point. The other 3 or 4 ports can be used for hardwire and you also get wifi through out your basement. You can connect your mobile devices via wifi. Depending on how your your basement is set up... not everything may be near the switch.

I would just get a PoE setup - much easier and you won't have to run long runs of wires or worry about signal through floors and walls.

I run a Linksys PLEK500(got on sale for like $45) and have ZERO speed loss or added ping vs connecting straight to my modem on a high speed 225mb down connection. For all intents and purposes it is exactly the same as plugging into my modem or router, except the device is across the house. Note that although it advertises a Gigabit port, you are still limited to the 500mbps speed of the device itself...which is not a problem if its for sharing internet unless you have Gigabit Fiber in your area since most ISPs aren't anywhere near 500mbps.

As a bonus, even thought it comes with two (one for router, one for device) you can get additional single ports and have an Ethernet connection anywhere in the house with an AC plug.

If your desktop, laptop, and PS4 are all near each other then running to a normal Ethernet switch will work fine, then just have each device wired into that. If they are farther apart and you don't want to run long Ethernet cables all over the place then the PoE setup is awesome.

That is an good idea. They even make them with multiple ports and build in wifi as well... the thing is that they are dependent on wiring in the house. For example they would not work at my inlaws house due to their old wiring and weird layout but it works great in my apartment without any loss of speed or added ping. But yeah great idea. Avoiding the long run and possible still getting multiple ports and wifi depending on option chosen.

I remember a few years ago, woot was getting rid of simple 10/100 switches, they're easy. just plug and play, no configuration necessary.

That's kind of what I'm looking for. I just want plug and play. I ended up getting a gigabit ethernet switch because it was $5 more than the 100 Mbit switch even though I only have a 75 Mbit connection... but it was only $5 more!!! lol

Well if you are like most folk and you some times transfer files between computers than having the gbit one will be more beneficial. FYI the EoP plugs are plug and play. I plugged on in, run a wire to it and plugged the other and run a wire to my pc. That simple. You press one other button to lock the connection to not allow more devices in but its that simple for those that don't want to run a long wire run.
