[Gamespot] PS4 Neo Might Lauch This Year - Page 2

Be wary of it having issues if they weren't planning to launch it this year but are doing so due to Microsoft.

Really I'm surprised that everyone thinks the Scorpio announcement is bad for Sony, in the long term this really puts Microsoft at a serious disadvantage.

Theoretically Microsoft can just release new hardware every year and react to Sony no matter what happens, but Scorpio will be competing with the PS5 for most of whatever lifespan it has.
The PS5 was always planned to come out around 2019, if they just squeeze that in one year sooner then we've got Sony "one upping" Microsoft in the same generation, again. Only this time the discrepancy could be much greater than the 50% difference we saw with Xbone and PS4.

Every rumor before E3 said Neo was planned to launch this fall, developers had kits last year, Sony is just confused about how to tell people about it since the PS4 is the majority of the market right now, Sony has the most to lose by taking a wrong step so they're staying quiet right now.

It's not a question of "if" Neo launches this fall, it's "how" Neo launches this fall. This is entirely a question of marketing strategy.

The only thing the Neo will do 4k is bluray. I don't understand where people suddenly got the 4k games from. That is not a small tech upgrade. We are talking about 2 times the power.

I really think console companies are done selling exclusive systems it cuts too much into the profit range. Of course PS5 titles will probably require a PS4K or better, but PS4K titles will only require a PS4 or better. They're most likely going to do stepping compatibility without damaging the backward. So a PS5 is most likely to support all PS4 titles up to it's point and so on.

Consoles used to be backwards compatible, till greed got the best of the creators and here we are.

To be fair they are somewhat justified, since lets say the jump from PS2 to PS3 was massive.

Anyways PS3 could still play PS1 games. PS4 instead can't play PS3,PS2 or PS1 games. Fair enough, now they are on a x86 platform they may have problems.

But if PS5 is still on x86 and is not backwards compatible with PS4 games? Now that's going to be unjustifiable.

There are 3 consoles, the Wii U is fully backwards compatible, the Xbox One is mostly backwards compatible for major titles, and the PS4 isn't. The PS3 also was backwards compatible for quite a while. If you want to throw in handhelds the 3DS is fully backwards compatible, and the PS Vita is backwards compatible with digital titles. I wouldn't really say backwards compatibility is a thing of the past.

Greed wasn't the issue with backward compatibility. It was technically a hardware scope problem and because PSX and PS2 are generations from PS4 there is absolutely no way to provide compatibility from those generations without a digital emulation of the games internally. PS3 has a more powerful CPU single threaded CPU than the PS4 and emulating complex tasks that could not be programmed across multiple cores is purely impossible. Considering AMD's recent breakthrough and it's non-pure x86 core technology we're going to see an extend life expectancy over Intel's.

4k / 6k tflops isn't enough for 4k gaming. a titan is around 4.4tflops and it can't really do 4k gaming. Hell even the 1070 / 1080 can't really do 4k gaming at 60-120fps. Their always at 30fps-60fps depending on what game it is. and their tflops is at 6/9tflops. I think for a true next gen con they'd need around 12 to 15tflops (hell why not even go for 20-25tflops) if we want to see 4k with higher richer textures (true next gen textures) instead of cheap low res textures.
