Should I Buy an ES Xeon?

I am planning to build a gaming/workstation build, with a e5-2670 v3, a asus x99 deluxe mobo, and a gtx 1070. On ebay there are many ES cpus, and can pick up a 2670 for around $200. Now I understand the legality of the ES cpus, and please just keep that out of your mind for this, and just consider performance. People say that they are binned higher and will perform better than retail, and others think that they are not as polished as retail, which I disagree with. I would think they are pretty equal to retail. So what are your thouhgs? I plan t overclock this, and dont expect to be hitting 4.5ghz, but would like something close to 3.7 or 4.0. Also, someth8ing that concerns me is the reliability of these chips, and how long it will last me. Now i dont need it for the rated lifetime of a retail chip, but want to use it for 3-4 years likely. this is my main build btw. So what do you guys think? thanks for your input!

I doubt you'll get up to 3.7GHz on that Xeon since it isn't multiplier unlocked. You're limited to BCLK oc.

For longevity it'll be as good as any other processor i think.

Alright, I thought that BCLK would be enough to get it up from 3.1 to 3.7 or so, but maybe not, I do have a custom water loop so i can bump that voltage up quite a bit.

The all-core GHZ turbo on the 2670 V3 ES is only 2.5ghz, it will turbo up to 2.8ghz when only a couple cores are activated. You're looking at about a 350mhz stable overclock on average for Xeon ES V3-V4 with the BLCK, so add that to the stock speeds and that's essentially what you'll have.

The E5 2690 V4 ES is a 14 core chip with the 2nd highest all core turbo (14 cores) @ 3GHZ and 3.2ghz with a couple cores. I'm getting this chip myself, around $500. The next highest all-core GHZ V3-V4 for an ES chip with lots of cores is over $2000.

I don't believe ASUS X99 support V4 ES versions yet, only the QS as of right now. V3 isn't an issue however.

I ordered the E5-2667 V4 (essentially a 6900k with a locked multi), i'll receive it about next week. Got it for 320 euroes, which is a nice deal. smile.gif
Comes at 2,9ghz base, 3,2ghz turbo freq. I'm planning on OCing it a bit via BCLK, hoping that I can get it to 105mhz. I've heard that BCLK overclocks the pci-e bus, RAM, etc? Is 105mhz BCLK still considered to be safe? Do I need to fiddle with the straps? I'll be using a Asrock X99 Extreme4 board.
