New AM3+ board till zen

Thread Starter
I wanna grab a better board than my 970-g46 for the meantime something around a 90-120 bucks. After perusing the forum all morning I am torn between the GA-990fx gaming the ASUS 970 aura gaming I like the MSI board for looks but it doesn't have the power setup I am looking for. I have a FX-8320 Some how oc'd for over 3 years to 4.4ghz without exploding. I feel like I could get way more out of the chip with a better board. It's a shame about MSI I have a 290 MSI and the board would go perfectly with it in regards to looks, especially with the red led's in the case.

What would you guys suggest?
If you're already at 4.4 then I would just be happy and call it a day. To be honest, anything above that doesn't warrant the swift uptick in heat and power consumption that you get with the bulldozer architecture. Also, the fact that many more games are becoming multithreaded gives your cpu a little more longevity until the next series come out.

I would just wait for zen and it's new platform and be content with what you have.

990FX is going to be a better chipset than 970, and I've had a GA-990FX-UD3 in the past, it was a fantastic board

After reading on here all morning and realizing this board has a 4+1? Power phase and terrible vrms I am a bit nervous. If you had the money to burn what would you suggest?

It's essentially a dead platform and therefore you're throwing your money down a well if you've already decided that you're going to upgrade when Zen / AM4 becomes available. You won't be able to sell your stuff for even remotely close to what you'll be paying for it, if you're going to buy now. Given this, I wouldn't be buying a new AM3+ board if I was in your shoes.

If you're really dead set on seeing your new purchase through then by all means. It might give you a slightly better OC with less voltage because of the better power delivery system, and i'm sure it'll make you feel more secure as well, but the reality is that when you're overclocking with anything it's a crapshoot when it comes to component quality. What kind of overclock do you have? Are you using standard voltage or are you using an offset value? As long as you're not slamming your CPU/MB with prime95 constantly and have good airflow through your case, along with a good quality power supply then I wouldn't worry about it.

With the money you'll save, buy better components next round.

I am running about 1.44 volts to the cpu and it's at 4.4ghz not sure what the multiplier/fsb is at haven't had to mess with it in a long time. The computer just keeps running fine. You have a good point. I guess if it's running now it should be alright. I never had problems with my vrms, I also just got a new case which is a massive improvement over my previous case that I've had since about 2004. Picked up a CM mastercase 5 maker series. Dropped my cpu temps to under 40c in say BF4. I am running a AIO corsair cooler on the 8320. Have a 750 watt corsair 80 plus psu oh and a MSI 290 that doesn't like to OC.

BUT on my previous case I had an 80mm very high CFM fan blowing straight on the VRMs I have no such thing in this case. Case has 3 140mm fans in the front the 2 120's on the AIO on top and a 140mm exhaust. I'll check vrm temps with the laser temp reader.

It's hard to recommend upgrading FX now because Zen is coming in a few months. There is a lot to be said about just sitting tight for now.

That said, the MSI G43,45,46 boards are the ones that ruined MSI's reputation because they could catch on fire when pushed too hard. It's your money and your choice.

If you are going to keep your system for a year or longer, then a new board is a good idea. 1.44 volts should be getting you 4.5-4.6 ghz if your 8320 is average and a better board could take you farther yet.

The MSI 970 Gaming is an odd one. Some people get good overclocks with it and others can't get 4.2 out of it.

The Gigabyte 990 Gaming is solid except for their terrible bios. If you can make it work it is a good buy.

The ASUS Aura is the complete package. It has good components and a good bios.

But again it only makes sense if you are going to be using it for at least another 6 months.

Well with zen out around what christmas? I think I will def have the board the am3 setup for another 6 months. That's if zen doesn't get pushed back. It's mainly for the peace of mind the aura is 8+2 correct?

Have you look at an ASRock 970 Performance AM3+? 8+1 power phase and it running my FX-8310 @ 4.0ghz @ stock voltage without any problems.

The better Asrock boards are ok for stock to mild overclocks but tend to overheat and have a short life span when pushed. For those reasons they are not recommended.
