First Time WC Questions

Thread Starter
In the next month I'll be building a WC workstation rig. As this will be my first WC project I have some questions so that things go as smoothly as possible.

Question 1: Is blowing into your loop advisable to drain water that can't be drained by gravity? Due to the nature of my case, a Silverstone FT02, the radiator will be the lowest point of my build. The only thing lower than the rad will be the 3x180mm intake fans and then the bottom panel of the case itself. My plan is to attach two valves and two T junctions in order to get the water out of the bottom radiator. Below is a poorly drawn diagram of the plan.

Question 2: What kind of additives should I add to the distilled water to prevent bio growth and minimize corrosion? I heard that EK does not recommend using PT Nuke because it will corrode Nickel plated parts. My loop will be full of Nickel plated parts. Is the Mayhems X1 clear concentrate a good choice for this?

Question 3: Finally, does this list of parts pass the sanity check?

CPU Block: Heatkiller IV Pro CuNi
GPU Block: Heatkiller IV XL & Backplate
Radiator: EK Coolstream Triple 180mm (540mm)
Fittings: Assorted Bitspower Compression Fittings
Pump: Aquacomputer D5 USB Pump
Pump Top: Heatkiller D5-Top
Reservoir: FrozenQ Reactor LF (already bought)
Tubing: PromoFlex LRT 3/8" x 5/8" 10ft Tubing

Thank you,
Matt

Im not sure how you can drain the water in the radiator aside from tilting the case unless you have a radiator like the UT60 where it has drain ports on the side. Blowing air into it shouldn't be a problem as well.

As for the additives, I just use a silver coil and there's no sign of corrosion on nickel plated parts.

For your fluid I would go with the X1. No need to get any additives and it's pretty cheap. Your parts list looks good (love the heatkiller blocks thumb.gif ) but you should check out the mayhems tubing. It's a lot cheaper and I find it easier to work with than the primochill.

I didn't look at any measurements, just a few pics of the case. I see it fits 3 180's in the bottom, but did you make sure there is enough space for the radiator to fit too? Would really suck to get a rad/fans and find out they don't fit.

Interesting. How long have you run that loop and how often do you change the water? I'd be perfectly fine with changing out the water every 3 months if need be. Thanks for the tips!

I took some measurements and I believe it will work without any invasive cutting or drilling. The case comes with 3 brackets that allow you to slide the fans in and out. I've already removed these brackets. All I need to do now is drill holes into the bottom of the frame so that I can mount the radiator and then drill out the rivets holding the drive cage in. If I keep the drive cage in I most definitely will run into space issues. Thanks for the warning though!

The X1 comes as a concentrate that you mix with distilled or you can get it premixed, but it's twice as much and will likely cost more to ship due to size/weight. The tubing is as good as or better than the primochill. There was a good review of it posted here a while back. I have it in two systems and has been working great.

I don't change it that frequently, I think maybe 9-12 months? Whenever I change gear, kinda lazy now tongue.gif

To be honest, I've tried almost every kind of fluid and spent hundreds of dollars on them including feser, ice dragon, mayhems. In the end, distilled works just as well if you don't care for dye smile.gif
