China, who's held the supercomputing crown for seven years now disagrees. They might have more supercomputers than China I'm sure (which is arguably even more important), but more powerful supercomputers is still crucial.

Supercomputers aren't that exciting because it's adding more CPUs for expanded parallel computations. Great for physics simulation and such, but it feels like cheating just "duct-taping" CPU cores together.

"Just duct taping them together" is not what most modern supercomputers are doing though. A lot of them use some very ingenious and inventive methods to increase parallel processing performance and many of the custom, prototype architectures that get used in these one-time bulk orders of unique processors filter down into consumer use.

As Ganf said, the networking is by far the most challenging part of it. It's more of a computer engineering and science expertise than anything else. Networking to make optimal use of the nodes and optimizing the code to work efficiently is incredibly hard. If building supercomputers was easy, everyone would be doing it (it usually only costs hundreds of millions, which for some nations isn't much to spend compared to some other budgets, assuming they can get the approval).

The next supercomputer being built is utilizing Xpoint on-chip data storage in a massive amount of Knight's Hill processors from Intel.

Sooo... Intel's latest and greatest architecture innovation, which by the way is a pretty damn big improvement over current architectures, is being beta tested in what will become the world's fastest and most expensive computer to date.

You'll get yours in 2020 or so.
