The chip is the most energy-efficient “many-core” processor ever reported, Baas said. For example, the 1,000 processors can execute 115 billion instructions per second while dissipating only 0.7 Watts, low enough to be powered by a single AA battery. The KiloCore chip executes instructions more than 100 times more efficiently than a modern laptop processor.

Because each processor is independently clocked, it can shut itself down to further save energy when not needed, said graduate student Brent Bohnenstiehl, who developed the principal architecture. Cores operate at an average maximum clock frequency of 1.78 GHz, and they transfer data directly to each other rather than using a pooled memory area that can become a bottleneck for data.

Someone help me out here, not sure what is so amazing about this. Sounds like a GPGPU chip that saves power but can't handle complex computations on account of not interfacing with any memory.

The difference between this and a GPU is that this processor is that a GPU core cluster (64 on GCN, 128 for Maxwell, idk for Pascal) has each of its constituent cores performing the same operation based on the operation principles of SIMD. This processor's 1,000 cores operate completely independently of each other and can determine their own clock rate which is something that GPU cores cannot do.

It is not for GP²U.

This is a MIMD processor and the easiest way to explain it;

This is taking it to its most complex form...
1000 physical cores can come out to being a single logical core. X cores for pre-fetch, branch prediction, fetch, pick, decode, dispatch. X cores for execution, renaming, etc. X cores for cache operations primarily being tasked to operate as pure cache units.

Just because this particular implementation does not have DDR doesn't mean the next model won't.

Mores cores => more virtual complexity and longer virtual pipelining in creating powerful virtual superscalar/vector processors.
More complex ISA => more flexibility of units in creating specialized logical cores. (CPU, GPU, PIM, Video Decoding, Video Encoding, Audio processing, Video processing, Cryptographic processing, etc)

Not quite true; NVIDIA GPUs have warp size of 32, which means one instruction gets scheduled to 32 FP ALUs. One SM can schedule multiple instructions every clock cycle, e.g. up to 6 in Kepler. The corresponding term in AMD GPUs in wavefront which has size of 64.

One SM has 64 FP32 ALUs in GP100, and 128 FP ALUs in GP10x. Which is, interestingly, the first time when we see such a difference within the same generation.
